UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences’ Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering is among 14 programs from nine collegiate institutions that have been recognized as Zero Energy Design Designation recipients in the 2024 cohort by the U.S. Department of Energy. Programs earned the designation by going above and beyond basic building science education by preparing students to design and construct sustainable, energy-efficient buildings with exemplary zero-energy design curricula and practicums.

The U.S. Geological Survey and One Earth published similar articles to UW’s release noting that three UW researchers were among 80 worldwide scientists who contributed to a United Nations’ (U.N.) living atlas that recently launched and shows the live migrations of ungulates. The interactive Atlas of Ungulate Migration was created by the Global Initiative on Ungulate Migration working in partnership with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals -- an environmental treaty of the U.N.

UW’s Literacy Research Center and Clinic is collaborating with Holy Name Catholic School in Sheridan to provide an initial needs assessment and yearlong professional development during the current academic year, according to The Sheridan Press.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that Gov. Mark Gordon will deliver an address on innovation Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Wyoming Computing Symposium at UW. The symposium is part of the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede on the UW campus this week.

Gordon and Campbell County commissioners will host “The Cowboy State Economy: Keeping Wyoming Energy Strong” forum Tuesday, Sept. 17. County 17 reported that Holly Krutka, executive director of UW’s School of Energy Resources (SER), will be part of a panel discussion. Wyoming Public Radio published a similar story.

A Mississippi State University (MSU) media release noted that Scott Shaw, a UW entomologist and parasitoid wasp expert, helped describe a new parasitoid wasp species with unusual biology in the eastern U.S. MSU Assistant Professor Matthew Ballinger’s research led to the discovery of the first described parasitoid wasp that lays its eggs inside of adult fruit flies. Popular Science used part of the release in an article it published.

Eugene Holubnyak, director of the Hydrogen Energy Research Center in UW’s SER, has been recognized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers as a 2024 recipient of a regional award for his technical expertise and exceptional contributions to programs focused on hydrogen transportation and storage. Hydrogen Central published UW’s release.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed several UW College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources faculty members and students about the college’s new ranch degree program that is based on leadership through a hands-on approach.

Haley Purifoy, a UW archaeology graduate student, was quoted in a Cowboy State Daily article that focused on how hunters used the atlatl, one of the oldest and most basic weapons, to bring down mammoths 12,000 years ago. An atlatl station was part of the recent Wyoming Archaeology Fair at the Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie.

A Casper College (CC) media release noted that Riley Bernard, a UW zoology and physiology assistant professor, will discuss “Echoes in the Night: Exploring the Mysteries of Bats in Wyoming” Thursday, Sept. 19. Bernard’s talk is part of CC’s Werner Wildlife Series.

The Cheyenne Post published UW Extension’s release announcing the biannual Master Gardener Conference will take place Friday-Sunday, Oct. 4-6, at Eastern Wyoming College’s Douglas campus.
