UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW’s research on the impact of trout introductions in the high-elevation lakes of the Wind River Range is continuing with the support of a $307,000 National Science Foundation grant. County 10 published UW’s release, noting that Assistant Professor Amy Krist will examine how evolutionary change of zooplankton driven by trout introductions affects ecosystem function of the lakes.

Axios reported that Plenty Unlimited Inc., whose origins include a student project at UW a decade ago, recently opened the world's first indoor vertical berry farm in Chesterfield, Va. Former UW student Nate Storey is the co-founder and chief science officer of the company.

UW Professor Bryan Shuman, a co-leader of the 2021 Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment, shared climate simulations recently in Jackson to help people understand what changes are coming in the area as temperatures continue to rise, according to Buckrail. Using data from UW’s Wyoming Anticipating the Climate-Water Transition (WyACT) project, Shuman says WyACT was developed to prepare for climate transition and help communities adapt to the future changes.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported on an expansion of the second cohort of school districts participating in the Reimagining and Innovating the Delivery of Education pilots, and an updated website to share information about the initiative and the Wyoming’s Future of Learning Partnership. UW’s College of Education is part of the Future of Learning Partnership.

Tara Righetti, a UW professor of subsurface property law and energy regulation, was quoted in an E&E News article titled “The caveat to Biden’s environmental justice legacy.” Righetti is a chair of a U.S. Department of Energy task force.

Cowboy State Daily featured McGinley Clinic, an orthopedic medical center in Casper, on its use of an artificial intelligence-empowered MRI machine. The article noted that UW researchers helped develop a software program as part of the MRI technology.

UW Extension released an updated publication promoting the local food movement across Wyoming, connecting consumers with producers. The Thermopolis Independent Record noted that the “2024 Wyoming Specialty Crop Directory” has nearly 1,100 listings, including many for producers and the specialty crops and products they offer.

SVInews.com reported that Randall Luthi, of Star Valley, was among four UW distinguished alumni honored during the university’s Homecoming for their professional achievements and support of the university.

UW rodeo team member Colton Farrow was featured in his hometown newspaper, The Greybull Standard, for his hot start in the Central Rocky Mountain Region. Farrow is the region’s top bareback rider with just two rodeos left in the fall schedule.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that Jon Ollwerther, executive vice president of Stan Lee Universe and Kartoon Studios, will speak at UW’s American Heritage Center Tuesday, Oct. 8.

A gift will enhance the Tomé Scholars to Fellows Program -- one of UW’s premier scholarship opportunities that was established at UW in 2021 by a major gift from the Tomé Foundation. Lander’s Jennifer Bautz was among the four students selected to receive a full-ride scholarship that year, County 10 and The Riverton Ranger reported.

UW President Ed Seidel penned an op-ed piece that was published in The Wyoming Tribune Eagle titled “UW bucks negative perceptions of higher education.”
