UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW is among several institutions nationwide to share in $20 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to address high-priority issues related to pests, including insects, nematodes, pathogens and weeds. UW is among the schools listed in the largest category: Extension Implementation.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW and Colorado State University are collaborating to offer “Outdoor Recreation Knowledge Exchange: Wyoming and Colorado Roundup” -- a monthly webinar series addressing opportunities and challenges in the outdoor recreation industry. UW’s partners are Extension and the Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Initiative.

The first-ever Tribal Energy Summit took place last week on the UW campus, according to Wyoming Public Radio. The conference featured representatives of energy-producing tribal nations and tribal energy companies to discuss the future of energy in rural Western communities. The UW School of Energy Resources organized the summit.

Marketplace included quotes from Julie Hill, dean of UW’s College of Law, for an article titled “Why many banks are preparing for an uptick of bad loans.”

When wild horse populations are allowed to grow beyond numbers set by the Bureau of Land Management, sage grouse numbers suffer, according to newly published research led by UW scientists. Northern Ag Network published UW’s release on the research led by UW Department of Ecosystem Science and Management Professor Jeff Beck. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and WyoFile published related articles.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release noting that a new study from UW researchers features Wyoming’s potential to take a lead role in the advancement of low-carbon hydrogen production from natural gas. Haibo Zhai, the Roy and Caryl Cline Distinguished Chair in Engineering and a UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences professor, led the study that was published in Environmental Science & Technology. The CS-T published a similar article.

During the current presidential election cycle, a research paper, led by Matt Burgess, a UW economics assistant professor, has been cited almost every two weeks in various media outlets. Recent mentions of Burgess’ research was mentioned in The Guardian, Politico, The Connecticut Mirror, Wyoming Public Radio and California Public Radio (KALW).

Energy Central published UW’s release announcing that UW researchers published a study on the relationship between insects and wind turbines. Michelle Weschler, an assistant research scientist, and Lusha Tronstad, both with UW’s Natural Wyoming Diversity Database, published “Wind Energy and Insects: Reviewing the State of Knowledge and Identifying Potential Interactions” that was published recently in PeerJ Life & Environment, a peer-reviewed, open access journal.

An article in the journal Science that attributes record-high global 2023 temperatures to an El Nino weather pattern quoted research enabled by Wyoming resources on the National Center for Atmospheric Research-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC). UW Department of Atmospheric Science Assistant Professor Daniel McCoy was one of the authors of the quoted research paper, which was enabled partially by flexibility provided by the NWSC.

Northern Ag Network published UW’s release announcing that Kelly Crane, interim dean of the university’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources, has been named dean of the college. Crane, who has led the college since December 2023, was approved by the UW Board of Trustees last week.

Beginning in January, UW will charge $10 per square foot per month for departments to use on-campus storage space, as well as $30 per month for remote parking vehicle storage, according to The Laramie Boomerang. The new initiative is to save UW additional costs of renting 16 storage units off campus.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is conducting its annual harvest survey, reaching out to hunters across the state via email or postcard to gather information about the 2024 hunting season, according to County 17. The Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center at UW once again is conducting the survey for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

In an article published in The Gillette News Record, Dan McCoy, director of UW’s WORTH Initiative at UW, told the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board recently that tourists had a favorable view of the Jackson area. WORTH conducted a survey for the local tourism board.

SVI Radio, in Afton, interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for Institutional Communications and Marketing, on a wide range of topics covering the latest research and news on the UW campus.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed for an article that was published in The Powell Tribune about how lower interest rates could make financing home loans more affordable across Wyoming.

Buckrail published UW’s release noting that UW Extension recently published a new weed treatment guide with recommendations for how to manage Canada thistle and other plants on the Wyoming Designated Noxious Weed List.

A new sculpture, “Lines of Sight,” was recently installed outside UW’s Engineering Education and Research Building. The Laramie Boomerang noted the sculpture is a representation of an antique transit, a device used to measure horizontal and vertical angles to help surveyors record geographic details.

GoCo Now Radio, in Torrington, published UW’s release noting that nearly 12,000 pounds of potatoes were donated to Food Bank of Wyoming during the fourth annual potato harvest at UW’s James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center last month.
