    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed a pair of UW professors for a segment titled “Will Wyoming’s energy industry change under Trump?” Providing answers to students’ questions were Rob Godby, an associate professor who researches energy and public policy, and Matt Burgess, an assistant professor who focuses on the political polarization and macroeconomics of climate change.

Davin Bagdonas, a UW School of Energy Resources research professional, was co-author of a paper -- with a University of Texas at Austin colleague -- indicating that the national coal ash supply contains enough rare earth elements to significantly bolster the national supply without any new mining. The paper recently appeared in the International Journal of Coal Science & Technology and was published by The Austin Journal and Mining Connection.

Discover Magazine quoted Jason Toohey, a UW anthropology associate professor, for an article that focused on ritual circles -- such as the ancient stone plaza found in Peru's Cajamarca Valley -- that date back as far as 5,000 years ago. Researchers are digging into these sites to learn more about the Andean cultures that created them.

Allison Mann, a UW anthropology assistant professor, was co-author of a study that indicates genetic evidence points to distinct Viking settlement of the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Phys.org reported that Christopher Tillquist, an associate professor at the University of Louisville, is the lead author of the new study first published in Frontiers in Genetics. MSN published a related article.

The Casper Star-Tribune featured comments from Kyle Moore, UW vice provost for enrollment management, on the challenges ahead as the university attempts to grow its enrollment.

Matt Schlomer, UW Department of Music assistant professor, discussed with Cowboy State Daily the creative process of conducting the university’s Symphonic Band through “Beyond Her Years” recently. The musical interpretation piece is dedicated to Cheyenne teenager Adelaide Bomberger and her story of dealing with cancer.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Sheridan Media reported that UW will host a Mental Wellness Forum with Gov. Mark Gordon to discuss the “Wy We Care” initiative. The program is an extensive statewide collaborative effort among all branches of state government, local community teams and private-sector providers aimed at reducing suicide risk and promoting mental health.

Martha McCaughey, co-chair of UW’s working group on Freedom of Expression, Intellectual Freedom and Constructive Dialogue, spoke with Wyoming Public Media on how the university is addressing free speech concerns.

SVI News interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for marketing and communications, on a number of items, including the university’s economic impact across the state, housing projects on campus and concealed carry on campus.

UW Extension has created a new program offering outdoor activities, health tips and more to Wyoming families. UW’s release, published by County 17, notes the “Ready, Set, Explore” program is free and open to any Wyoming family that wants to participate. The Riverton Ranger published another UW Extension release announcing the international “Sheep Innovators Exchange: Wyoming to New Zealand.”

The Cheyenne Post noted that UW Extension recently honored employees who go beyond to serve their communities statewide during a recent professional development conference in Sheridan.
