    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Mining Engineering and Carbon Credits noted that UW is among six entities nationwide to share in $45 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to create regional consortia to accelerate the development of critical mineral and materials supply chains. According to UW’s release, the university will lead the Great Plains and Interior Highlands project, which consists of 10 states and four basins, to develop domestic supply chains that use secondary and unconventional critical mineral resources. Oil City News and County 17 published UW’s release.

Scientists with the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and UW recently published research on the habitat needs of the threatened Canada lynx in the southern Rocky Mountains, particularly western Colorado, according to ABC7, in Denver, The Aspen Times and Pagosa Springs Sun. Decades of reintroduction efforts, monitoring and cutting-edge research have ensured that this elusive wild cat has a foothold in Colorado’s high-elevation forests, despite ongoing challenges. The Summit Daily News cited UW’s published research on the subject.

WyoFile published a profile on UW’s Greg Nickerson, a Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit associate research scientist, who recently received the 2025 Pattie Layser Greater Yellowstone Creative Writing and Journalism Fellowship for his Deer 255 project. Nickerson’s award was for his yearslong effort to track the path of Deer 255, a doe known for migrating more than 200 miles each spring and fall in search of food. The Wyoming Arts Council’s $3,500 fellowship offers Nickerson an opportunity for a weeklong writing residency within the greater Yellowstone region.

Wyoming Public Radio highlighted UW’s new Jay Kemmerer WORTH Institute that will support the outdoor recreation, tourism and hospitality industries in the state and in the region. A $5 million donation from the Kemmerer family and some additional state funding has turned it into a permanent institution at UW.

Oil City News published UW’s release announcing that it has created the Patrick Heasler Professorship in Mathematics and Statistics, which reflects the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service. UW alumnus Patrick Heasler endowed it.

The Powell Tribune highlighted hometown student Owen Fink, who recently participated in the first Wyoming Leadership Academy at UW. Students in the Leadership Academy -- a collaborative effort between the UW College of Business and Leadership Wyoming -- delivered final presentations addressing key industries and challenges pivotal to Wyoming’s economy.

Sherrill Shaffer, UW Guthrie Distinguished Professor of Banking and Financial Services Emeritus, offered valuable credit card information in a question-and-answer interview with MoneyGeek. The online publication offers free information on managing personal finances.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW is introducing its Winter Welcome program Thursday, Jan. 16, to aid new students as they arrive on campus. UW’s release noted that the program -- led by the Student Success and Graduation Hub -- is designed to introduce incoming students to college life.

Danny Dale, a UW professor of physics and astronomy, recently had a hand in bringing spiral galaxies to the public in a unique way -- through a new United States Postal Service stamp that will be unveiled later this month. The Laramie Boomerang published UW’s announcement.

UW Extension’s GrowinG Internship Program is now accepting applications for 2025. According to a UW media release published by County 17 and Cap City News, the program connects beginning farmers and ranchers with host farms and ranches, providing interns with hands-on agricultural experiences.
