State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
President Donald Trump's promise to go all in on fossil fuels includes coal. Some energy experts say any bump for coal under the administration is likely to be temporary since natural gas is cheaper and there is a durable market for renewable energy no matter who holds the White House. UW economics Professor Rob Godby was quoted in the Associated Press article that was republished by The Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Washington Post and Newsday.
Opinion contributors to The Hill wrote an article, titled “Republicans hold the key to depolarizing the climate issue,” that focused on how the GOP may hold the key to bridging the partisan gap on climate solutions. The article cited two separate research papers from Matt Burgess, a UW Department of Economics assistant professor, and two colleagues: “Advancing bipartisan decarbonization policies: lessons from state-level successes and failures“ and “Electric utility plans are consistent with Renewable Portfolio Standards and Clean Energy Standards in Most U.S. States.”
The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that the UW Board of Trustees last week approved changes to the fee schedule for next school year and a new scholarship -- the “Good Neighbor Option” to students from Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Montana and South Dakota.
Mike Smith, UW vice president for governmental affairs and community engagement, has been appointed as a commissioner to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, a regional interstate compact serving the higher education and education needs of 15 Western states, the U.S. Pacific territories and freely associated states. Oil City News published UW’s release.
Oil City News also noted, through a UW release, that Gaurdia Banister, a nursing executive, and Tom Walsh, a global technology executive, were recently appointed as new members to the UW Foundation board.
Modern Campground published UW’s release noting that UW has established the Jay Kemmerer WORTH Institute, a move poised to impact Wyoming’s outdoor recreation, tourism and hospitality industries. A $5 million gift from Jay and Karen Kemmerer, along with state matching funds, brings the total investment to over $6 million.
Jeff Hamerlinck recently was appointed to a three-year term on the U.S. National Geospatial Advisory Committee, a federal committee sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Hamerlinck is the associate director of UW’s School of Computing and the director of UW’s Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center, according to the university’s news release published by The Laramie Boomerang.
Wyoming Public Media reported that UW Professor Danny Dale was among a team of 100 people to capture an image of a galaxy that is now on a postage stamp. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured the image. Read UW’s release here on Dale’s involvement with the project.
Twenty nonformal world language and culture sessions are now being offered through UW’s popular World Language and Culture Program. The CS-T published UW’s release on the announcement.
UW Extension will host a WESTI Ag Day forage conference next month in Worland. The all-day conference will focus on alfalfa production, according to UW’s release published by Sheridan Media. Another UW Extension release -- published by County 10 -- announced the Fremont County Farm and Ranch Days will be next month in Riverton.
UW Athletics -- in conjunction with the grand opening of the WYO Sports Ranch in Casper -- will participate in the WYO Sports Ranch Festival in March. The News Letter Journal reported that the event would feature camps with instruction by Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes.
