    UW in the News

    State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

    Ecosystems that have never been seen before are being accidentally created by humans, offering a stark look into the nature of tomorrow, according to a BBC report that focused on Oahu -- Hawaii’s third-largest island. The segment included comments from Corey Tarwater, a UW associate professor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology and the Robert B. Berry Distinguished Chair in Ecology. Tarwater has been researching Oahu’s ecosystem since 2014.

    ScienceDirect published a UW-led study report that detailed how fences and roads led to a massive pronghorn winter die-off in south-central Wyoming in 2023.     The tragic death of former UW rodeo team member Dylan Grant, 24, who was from Pavillion and also Jackson, was messaged on the team’s Instagram account. Grant was killed last week competing in a pro rodeo event in Texas. The news received local, national and international media coverage.

    UW ROTC members recently toured Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, near Tucson, Ariz., according to the Air Force base’s media release, which featured several photos. UW cadets were given the opportunity to explore various aircraft, gaining insights on their functionality and learning about the vital role they play in supporting the Air Force’s mission.

    Cowboy State Daily noted that a Denver-based company is working with UW’s Center for Biogenic Natural Gas Research to increase natural gas production using agricultural byproducts and microorganisms. Cowboy Clean Fuels is developing a facility about 30 miles southwest of Gillette to work with UW to increase natural gas production.

    Mountain West News Bureau, a consortium of Rocky Mountain National Public Radio affiliates, including Wyoming Public Radio, included comments from UW’s Lusha Tronstad, lead invertebrate zoologist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at UW, and other experts who say North America’s rapidly declining population of monarch butterflies could have an important habitat in the Mountain West.

    Tree Frog Forestry News published UW’s release showing that responsible logging can help Eastern forests. Scientists at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies -- led by Sara Germain, who completed the research as a Cary postdoctoral associate and is now an assistant professor in UW’s Department of Botany -- led the study.

    This is Laramie published UW’s release announcing that the Native American Scholarship and Awards Ceremony will be Wednesday, April 9. The event will recognize UW Native students’ hard work, dedication and achievements, as well as the generous donors who help make their education possible.

    UW’s Symphony Orchestra (UWSO) performed a free public concert last week at the Natrona County High School’s John F. Welsh Auditorium in Casper. Oil City News published part of UW’s release that noted UWSO tours are funded by the Symphony Association for UW, private donors and host communities.

    The Gillette News Record publicized a UW Pre-K Roadshow program recently to one of Campbell County’s elementary schools. Teams of UW undergraduate and graduate students, along with faculty members, travel throughout the state facilitating hands-on learning in pre-K-12 STEM classrooms using active-learning techniques through the Science Initiative Roadshow.

    UW College of Business economists are presenting county-specific economic forecasts at each stop during the Wyoming Business Alliance’s (WBA) 2025 Voices of Business Listening Tour, which began late last month in Cheyenne. WBA is traveling the entire state, connecting directly with business leaders, entrepreneurs and community partners, according to The Powell Tribune.

    The Gillette News Record reported on Campbell County High School’s successful awards haul its students received at the 2025 World Languages Day competition, a statewide event hosted by UW. More than 350 visiting secondary students and 33 teachers representing 13 junior high and high schools from across the state participated early last month.

    Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for Institutional Communications and Marketing, spoke with Sheridan Media about UW’s designation as an R1 university by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

    The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release noting that Denim Day, the world’s largest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign, will be observed Wednesday, April 23, on campus.

    UW Extension Educator Melissa Cook was among speakers at last week’s AgWell Summit at the Hot Springs County Museum and Cultural Center in Thermopolis, according to The Greybull Standard.
