UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Cowboy State Daily cited a UW Center for Business and Economic Analysis report for an article on the proposed CK Gold Project in Laramie County. UW’s report estimates that the project will create 2,600 direct and indirect jobs, as well as $70 million to $80 million in taxes and royalties.

Campus Rec, in an article on how universities retain student workers, included comments from Sarah Luke, associate director of campus recreation at Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center. Luke said she prioritizes schedule flexibility, which is key to long-term retention of student workers.

UW Professor Tracey Owens Patton was quoted throughout a Glamour article that focused on Black cowgirls and the history of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, which has existed for more than four decades and features Black cowboys and cowgirls. The article, titled “Black Cowgirls paved the way before Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter,” focused on Black cowgirls reclaiming their story. Patton is co-author of a book that focuses on the history of minorities in rodeo.

Sheridan Media reported that a fencing project is benefiting wildlife and will reduce fence maintenance for ranchers. Using research from UW and other sources, the Powder River Fence Initiative collaborates with ranchers, landowners, volunteers and organizations to implement wildlife-friendly fencing solutions tailored to individual operations.

UW Extension has revitalized a key county-based internship program funded by the state extension office and UW College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that the paid internship program is designed for high school graduates, students currently enrolled in a university or community college, and GED holders planning to further their education.

SVI News interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, who discussed a number of topics, including a student-run venture capital program, student business consulting services, a new online portal for LiDAR data and expanding career opportunities for art students.

The Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) at UW has launched the Wyoming LiDAR (light detection and ranging) Data Portal that provides unprecedented public access to high-resolution elevation and contour data across the state. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW Extension has launched a website titled AGE (Adapt, Grow, Empower) to help serve Wyoming communities with aging populations. The site provides users with resources, information and support for aging with independence, dignity and safety.
