State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming
and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
Drew Bennett, UW’s MacMillan Professor of Practice in Private Lands Stewardship, is
quoted in a WyoFile article about the growing use of virtual fences by ranchers in the West. Proponents
of virtual fences say they’re a way to not only lower the number of physical fences,
but also to give landowners more flexibility in how they move and manage their cattle
on a complicated landscape.
In a New York Times article about the discovery of a new species of bird in Brazil, UW zoologist Jessie
Williamson says genetic analysis will be essential to better understand the evolutionary
history of the slaty-masked tinamou. Williamson specializes in mountain birds but
was not involved in finding the new species that exhibits a total lack of fear toward
people.
Cowboy State Daily reported on the receipt of a nearly $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of
Education by the Firearms Research Center in UW’s College of Law. The center will
develop a national program that will provide secondary school teachers with nonpartisan,
historically grounded content on the origins, legal interpretation and civic implications
of the Second Amendment.
Continuing national attention being received by UW related to the success of alumnus
Josh Allen was highlighted by Cowboy State Daily. And the Buffalo Bills released a 20-minute docu-video on his jersey retirement at UW that has received
attention from outlets including K2 Radio.
Jenna Shim, the John “Jack” Ellbogen Dean of UW’s College of Education, was quoted
extensively in a Wyoming Tribune Eagle article about the death of UW alumna Judy Catchpole, who served as Wyoming’s superintendent
of public instruction from 1995-2003 and was a UW honorary degree recipient.
The “branch night” for UW’s Army ROTC cadets at War Memorial Stadium last week was
mentioned by Stars and Stripes and covered by the Laramie Boomerang. This event honors the commissioning cadets of the ROTC program as they receive their
branch assignments in the U.S. Army.
The UW Department of Botany’s Rocky Mountain Herbarium was featured in a two-part
series in the Laramie Boomerang. Of the 794 herbaria in the United States, the Rocky Mountain Herbarium is the 12th
largest.
Several UW employees and former students are part of a new documentary, “Generation
Warrior,” that will make its broadcast debut on Wyoming PBS this week, according to
a report by K2 Radio. Filmed over four years, the documentary follows eight Northern Arapaho and Eastern
Shoshone youth as they confront the realities of early adulthood.
The Powell Tribune picked up UW’s release about the Department of Theatre and Dance receiving a host
of nominations and awards for its recent production of the “Bright Star” musical.
The Newcastle News Letter Journal profiled teacher Bessie Colgrove, one of those spotlighted in the recent UW Trustees Education Initiative Showcase. She was one of five alumni who explained how they began teaching classes in career and technical education.
