State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming
and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
UW atmospheric scientist Jeff French is quoted in a BBC article about cloud seeding in China. French, who led a groundbreaking study in 2017
showing that cloud seeding produces snow, questions some of the claims made by China
about the volume of precipitation produced by that country’s seeding efforts.
A Cowboy State Daily article about legislation aimed at addressing Wyoming’s physician shortage notes
that UW’s Family Medicine Residency programs in Casper and Cheyenne recently graduated
five doctors who all chose to stay and practice in the state.
UW Professors Bryan Shuman and Todd Surovell are quoted in a High Country News article, “How pronghorn outran the ice age,” that describes how the animals survived
dramatic climate change 12,000 years ago.
Wyoming Public Media featured “Life Between the Rails,” an oral history project of UW’s American Heritage
Center. Since May 2024, historian and archivist Leslie Waggener and project assistant
Tana Libolt have been listening to and recording stories from Union Pacific Railroad
employees and employee family members.
Wyoming Public Media also highlighted a project by UW Extension Educator Callie Surber and Associate Professor
Corrine Knapp that involved interviewing ranchers in the Upper Wind River Basin about
how they’re navigating policy, economic and climate challenges.
UW Associate Professor Jean Williams-Woodward’s presentation about a type of fungal
infection that has become the No. 1 enemy of sugar beet farmers in the Big Horn Basin
was covered by the Northern Wyoming News. While there’s no way to eradicate the fungus, Williams-Woodward presented some management
strategies that would help farmers control the disease.
The Sheridan Press and 7220 Sports were among the outlets that published UW’s release about the first Pistol Pete mascot in 1970.
