The Joseph and Stephanie Leimkuhler Scholarship provides financial support for students pursuing a master's degree in petroleum engineering, with a focus on drilling engineering. This competitive scholarship covers tuition and fees for remote students, and fully-funded graduate assistantship positions for main-campus students.
UW students have access to the one-of-a-kind Drilling and Completions Simulation Facility, which features industry-leading technology from 3T Drilling Systems.
Graduate students can further their knowledge in drilling engineering with specialized courses such as:
Joseph “Joe” Leimkuhler, chief operating officer of Beacon Offshore Energy -- with offices in Houston, Texas and Covington, La. -- has deep ties to UW. After earning a bachelor's degree in geology and forestry from the University of Montana, he began working as a “mud engineer” on drilling rigs in Wyoming. It was there that he met Jack Evers, UW’s former head of petroleum engineering, during a student tour of a rig in the Snowy Range.
Originally set on attending law school, his path changed when Jack Evers encouraged him to pursue engineering instead. After completing prerequisite coursework while working on drilling rigs across Wyoming, Joe, along with his wife and children, moved to Laramie. With the financial support of a state teaching assistantship, Joe completed his master’s degree in petroleum engineering in 1987. This experience laid the foundation for his long and successful career in the Oil & Gas Industry.
Joe Leimkuhler serves on the Department of Energy Petroleum Engineering Industrial Advisory Board and the Dean's Advisory Council for the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Joe, along with his wife, Stephanie, established the Joseph and Stephanie Leimkuhler Scholarship to provide aspiring drilling engineers the opportunity to earn a master’s degree at the University of Wyoming and achieve success in the Oil & Gas Industry.
The University of Wyoming offers three specialized graduate programs designed to equip students with the technical expertise and practical experience needed needed to lead complex drilling operations anywhere in the world.
