March 27, 2014 — The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Alpha Mu chapter of Phi Delta Chi recently gave a medication safety presentation to a Laramie Boy Scout troop as part of a community outreach service project. Members Nathan Holcomb, Charlie Morrison, Karsten Josie, and Brandon Anderson gave a thirty-minute presentation to a group of approximately 30 children and adults and provided each scout member with a handout to take to home to their parents. The handout outlined key issues for parents to focus on when trying to increase medication safety around their children. Topics included storage of medications; ensuring babysitters, teachers and other caretakers are aware of children’s allergies; as well as proper dosing practices for children.

The students discussed the importance of understanding medication safety with the children. This included what to do if the children found a parent’s pill bottle left out, the seriousness of misusing medications, and the dangers of taking medications when the reason for taking them is unknown. The students also answered questions from the children and parents about child consumption of large amounts of medication, asthma and allergies, and then did mock scenarios pertaining to medication safety. Phi Delta Chi hopes to partner with the Boy Scouts again later this spring and in the upcoming year to give presentations to all of the local dens.
