April 11, 2014 — It was great to witness first-year Pharm. D. students present six
posters on drug interactions (DIs) during the CHS Research day on April 11, 2014.
Each poster described a specific interaction of drug with food, disease, or another
drug. These posters were presented as part of the PHCY6102 Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics
course taught by Dr. Baskaran “Baski” Thyagarajan, M. Pharm., Ph.D., assistant professor

Pharmacists serve as the “primary line of defense” for the prevention/management of
potential DIs. The posters presented by students not only increased the awareness
on DIs, but also emphasized the responsibility of pharmacists in monitoring for drug
interactions and notifying the physician and patient about potential consequences
of such interactions. Posters highlighted the importance of the Patient-Pharmacist-Physician
team (3Ps) to work together to avoid or make the DIs less severe.
