June 20, 2014 — Committees at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy are a very important part of the administrative structure of the school. Faculty, staff, and student members of these committees work very hard behind the scenes throughout the year. In order to increase awareness and provide information to our alumni, faculty, staff, and students of the efforts and accomplishments of our committees, we feature committee spotlights in our quarterly newsletter, the News Capsule. These features show how the committees are positively impacting our program and our students. Previously, the Curriculum and Instruction Committee and the Assessment Committee were featured.

This month, the Admissions Committee is in the spotlight

The Admissions Committee is made up of five faculty, one student, and two staff.

Mission

Admissions Philosophy

It is the charge of the Admissions Committee at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy to review all applications and select a highly qualified and competitive pool of candidates for admission into the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy. The admissions procedures will be reviewed yearly to help facilitate efficient and effective processes to screen and accept exceptional candidates for admission.

Goals and objectives

Highlights of the goals and objectives for the Admissions Committee include:

  • Seek candidates with diversity, exhibiting cultural sensitivity and cultural humility for all people for more harmonious relationships.

  • Develop and execute a plan to maximize the attraction, development, and retention of the best students.

  • Improve the commitment of high-priority candidates.

  • Develop an attractive scholarship program.

  • Provide input into the structure of the pre-pharmacy curriculum.

  • Increase alumni participation in admissions process.

Accomplishments

  • A standardized interview process has been implemented helping the committee identify those individuals capable of becoming scholar-practitioners.

  • A sufficient pool of qualified students was submitted to the Dean of the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy. From this pool of students, a complete, qualified, and diverse class of students will begin in the Fall of 2014.

  • Plans are in place to incorporate the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy alumni into the interview process starting in the Fall of 2014. Watch future newsletters for more information.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges for the Admissions Committee is to consistently evaluate performance in prerequisite courses fairly and to determine those prerequisites that should be required in order to ensure success in the Pharm.D. program. Another challenge that the committee faces is the recruitment of highly qualified candidates who may be considering other schools of pharmacy or who may not even have the profession of pharmacy on their radar.
