UW NCPA Members Attend National Convention
November 21, 2014 — Quyen Bui, Songlin Cai, and Brian Martisius attended the National
Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) national conference in Austin, Texas, October
18–22, 2014. During the convention, they attended future pharmacist programming workshops
to broaden their knowledge about independent pharmacies and learned how to become
leaders and advocates for the pharmacy profession.
Pharmacy Students Represent UW NCPA Chapter at RxPlus Annual Meeting

had the opportunity to attend the RxPlus Pharmacies annual meeting located in Westminster,
Colorado, August 14–16, 2014, as representatives of the National Community Pharmacists

UW Doctor of Pharmacy/MBA Students Present Overview of Summer Project
October 3, 2014 — Steven Schoeber, Jimmy Curtiss, and Anna Bayert, inaugural students
of the new University of Wyoming Doctor of Pharmacy/MBA dual degree program, presented
an overview of process for their summer 2014 business project to UW School of Pharmacy
faculty. Their advisor is Dr. Larry Staubach, assistant professor of social and administrative
pharmacy.

September 30, 2014 — The 8th Annual "Fall into Good Health" Health Fair invites the

UW School of Pharmacy Professor Bruce Culver Retires
September 30, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Professor Bruce Culver,
Ph.D., retired in September following a distinguished 37-year career of teaching,
research, and service. During his career, Culver influenced countless students and
colleagues through his teaching and mentorship, and was respected for his administrative
service to the school and the university.
UW School of Pharmacy Staff Assistant Bobbie Cesko Retires
September 30, 2014 — Bobbie Cesko, staff assistant at the University of Wyoming School
of Pharmacy, retired in September after working for the university for over 35 years.
During her 32-plus years with the school, Cesko worked for six of the seven deans,
including Jack Bone, Robert Nelson, John Baldwin, Paul Ranelli, John Vandel, and Linda
Gore Martin. She managed all functions of the administrative office in the School
of Pharmacy and saw over 1000 students graduate during her career.
UW School of Pharmacy Welcomes Class of 2018
September 25, 2014 — The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy welcomed members of the class of 2018 into its professional pharmacy program in August. Following the White Coat Ceremony, the incoming students were congratulated by Dean Linda Gore Martin with family and friends in attendance.
Allan Weber Named UW School of Pharmacy 2014 Outstanding Alumnus
September 22, 2014 — Allan E. Weber, Ph.D., (B.S.P. ’63) was recently named the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy 2014 Outstanding Alumnus. Weber’s highly successful pharmaceutical development career includes numerous accomplishments, including participating in over 12 new domestic and international drug approvals and receiving three Presidential Awards at Abbott Laboratories for project leadership and technical advances leading to new product approvals.

September 22, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy faculty Mary Onsyko,

UW School of Pharmacy Welcomes New Faculty and Staff
September 15, 2014 — The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy is pleased to welcome
the following new faculty and staff. Allison Mann is a clinical assistant professor
of pharmacy practice at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, Colorado;
Leena Myran is a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the Family Medicine
Residency Program in Cheyenne; Jared Bushman is an assistant professor of pharmaceutical
sciences who will be teaching pathophysiology; and Dorie Gallegos is the new staff
assistant.
Jaime Hornecker Nominated for 2014 Wyoming Women of Influence Award
August 25, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy faculty Jaime Hornecker,
Pharm.D., BCPS, was nominated for a 2014 Wyoming Women of Influence Award. The award
honors those women who influence policy, behavior, ethics, and success within their
industry and across Wyoming. Hornecker was nominated in the health care category.
Michelle Hilaire Receives ACCP Academy Scholarship
August 24, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Clinical Associate Professor
of Pharmacy Practice Michelle Hilaire, Pharm.D., CDE, BCPS, was selected to receive
one of ten scholarships to attend the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP)
Leadership and Management Academy, which is an educational program aimed at developing
leadership and management abilities. Hilaire was awarded the scholarship from the
ACCP Ambulatory Care Practice and Research Network.
UW Pharmacy P3 Student Ashley Francis Attends PDC Leadership Development Seminar
August 14, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy P3 student Ashley Francis,
from San Anselmo, California, attended the Phi Delta Chi (PDC) Pharmacy Fraternity
15th Leader-Development Seminar August 6–10 in Tampa, Florida.
UW Pharmacy Student Greg Miller Named 2014 AACP Walmart Scholar
July 30, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy student Greg Miller, from
Winnipeg, Canada, received a 2014 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)
Walmart Scholar Award. The award provided $1,000 scholarships to 85 student-faculty
pairs from across the country to attend the 2014 AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers
Seminar in Grapevine, Texas, July 26–30. Miller and faculty mentor Suzanne Clark attended
the meeting.

July 28, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Dean Linda Gore Martin has been named to serve a three-year term on the International Advisory Board of the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy.
UW's Megan Saunders Named Finalist for National Pharmacy Award
July 17, 2014 — Recent University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy graduate Megan Saunders
of Chinook, Washington, has been selected as a finalist for the Next-Generation Pharmacist
award.
Ardis Meier Receives 2014 Bowl of Hygeia Award
July 15, 2014 — The Wyoming Pharmacy Association has presented alumna Ardis Meier,
R.Ph., (B.S.P. ’77) with the 2014 Bowl of Hygeia Award in recognition of her outstanding
service to the community and to the profession of pharmacy.
Jaime Hornecker Named 2014 Wyoming Pharmacist of the Year
July 15, 2014 — Jaime Hornecker (Pharm.D. ’03), from Casper, Wyoming, has been named
the 2014 Pharmacist of the Year by the Wyoming Pharmacy Association (WPhA). Hornecker
is not only making a difference as a leader in pharmacy, she is on the ground level
of educating future pharmacists, contributing to the care of patients, and educating
other health care professionals.
Lanae Fox Receives 2014 Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award
July 15, 2014 — The Wyoming Pharmacy Association has recognized Lanae Fox (Pharm.D.
’10), from Casper, Wyoming, as the 2014 Distinguished Young Pharmacist. The award
was created in 1987 by Pharmacist Mutual Companies to encourage newer pharmacists
to become involved in association activities and civic projects, and to recognize
one pharmacist in each state for individual excellence and outstanding contributions.
Stevi Sy Elected President of WPhA
July 15, 2014 — Stephanie ‘Stevi’ Sy (Pharm.D. ’10), from Casper, Wyoming, has been
elected president of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association (WPhA). Sy is also the recipient
of the 2014 McKesson Leadership Award. She has been involved in many aspects of pharmacy
in her career, is an outstanding advocate for her profession, and is an excellent
role model for all pharmacists.
Guanglong He Invited to Serve on AHA Research Committee
July 14, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Assistant Professor of Medicinal
Chemistry Guanglong (Larry) He, Ph.D., has been invited to be a member of the American
Heart Association 2014–2015 SouthWest Affiliate Research Committee.
Pharmacy Association Chooses UW Faculty Member for Leadership Program

is among 30 faculty members nationwide selected for the American Association of College

Bobbie Cesko Receives UW College of Health Sciences Dean’s Award
June 24, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Staff Assistant Bobbie Cesko
has received the College of Health Sciences Dean’s Award. The Dean’s Award is the
highest award in the college and is given to someone who has an outstanding career
devoted to their division and the college.
Bruce Culver Receives UW College of Health Sciences Career Achievement Award
June 24, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Professor Bruce Culver, Ph.D.,
has received the 2014 College of Health Sciences Career Achievement Award. Culver
was recognized by the college for the impact he has had throughout his 37-year career
of teaching, research, and service.

48th Annual Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Spring Conference
in San Antonio, Texas, May 3–7, 2014. Their lecture-discussion was titled, "Coming
Full Circle with Pain Management: Involving Residents, Integrating Disciplines, and
Improving Patient Care.”
Cowboys and Cowgirls Set Program Records for All-MW Honors
UW Pharmacy Student Taylor Gardner Earns All-MW Honors in Track and Field
May 19, 2014 — The University of Wyoming men's and women's track and field teams set
two program records Monday, as 15 Cowboys and Cowgirls collected 22 All-Mountain West
honors when the league office announced the accolades. Sophomore Kereston Thomas and
senior Taylor Gardner highlighted the honorees for the Cowgirls with three apiece.
Sreejayan Nair Promoted to Professor
May 12, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy faculty member Sreejayan Nair,
Ph.D., director of the UW Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program and director of the Center
for Cardiovascular Research and Alternative Medicine, was promoted to professor by
the UW Board of Trustees in May. Nair joined the School of Pharmacy in 2002 as an
assistant professor of pharmacology and was promoted to associate professor in 2008.

May 10, 2014 — Members of the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy class of 2014
received their Doctor of Pharmacy degrees during the UW College of Health Sciences
commencement ceremonies May 10. As the class members finalized their plans following
graduation, many shared their future plans, which include residencies, hospital, retail
and community pharmacy, and spending time with family. (see photos of the class of 2014 commencement)
UW Pharmacy Student Misty O’Lexey Selected for Leadership Conference
May 7, 2014 — Pharmacy student Misty O’Lexey (class of 2016) was selected to attend
the 15th Annual Cardinal Health Student Leadership Conference May 15–17, 2014, in
Houston, Texas. The all-expense paid conference joined the top pharmacy students from
across the nation for a special two-day program to better prepare them for assuming
future leadership roles in health-system pharmacy.
UW School of Pharmacy Honors 2014 Preceptors of the Year
May 3, 2014 — Alumni Natasha Gallizzi (Pharm.D. ’01) and Lee Smith (B.S.P. ’75) were
selected as the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy 2014 Preceptors of the Year.
Gallizzi and Smith were recognized at the Annual Honors and Awards Banquet for their
significant contributions to the education of UW pharmacy students.

Weber Family Scholarship Helps Future Pharmacists
April 29, 2014 — The pharmaceutical industry gave so much to alumnus Allan Weber (BSP
’63) and his wife, Sharon, it was only natural of them to want to give something back.
Using their estate, they will create the Allan E. and Sharon J. Weber Family Memorial
Scholarship at the UW School of Pharmacy to help foster excellence and to provide
financial support to students entering the program.

April 29, 2014 — In April, Antoinette Brown, R.Ph., UW School of Pharmacy coordinator
of experiential education, gave three presentations on prescription drug abuse to
groups in Casper, Wyoming.

Strategies and Reducing Disease Burden.”
Jodi Schilz Presents BMS Ph.D. Dissertation Defense
April 17, 2014 — In April, Jodi Schilz, a graduate student in the University of Wyoming
Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Ph.D. Program, defended her doctoral dissertation titled,
“Investigating the Ability of Cupric Oxide Nanoparticles to Adsorb Metal Contaminants
from Uranium in-Situ Recovery Production Bleed Water and Assessing the Associated Changes in Cytotoxicity.”
2014 Pharmacy Frolic 5K Results
April 15, 2014 — The 2014 Pharmacy Frolic 5K, sponsored by the Wyoming Student Society of Health-Systems Pharmacy (WSSHP), was very successful, with good weather and a high turnout. The race was held April 5, 2014, at Optimist Park/Laramie River Greenbelt in Laramie, Wyoming, with proceeds split between the Laramie Interfaith-Good Samaritan and WSSHP. 2014 College of Health Sciences Grand Rounds/Research Day
April 11, 2014 — The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy (SOP) was well-represented
at the 2014 College of Health Sciences Grand Rounds April 11, 2014. The 20th Annual
Research Day showcased the exciting research and work of faculty, researchers, and
students. A highlight of the event was the Otis L. Hoy Memorial Seminar, which featured
a presentation by keynote speaker David Pollock, Ph.D., from the University of Colorado
School of Medicine, titled, “The Genesis of Our Genomes: Repetitive Elements and the

First-Year Pharm. D. Students Present Posters during CHS Research Day
April 11, 2014 — It was great to witness first-year Pharm. D. students present six
posters on drug interactions (DIs) during the CHS Research day on April 11, 2014.
Each poster described a specific interaction of drug with food, disease, or another
drug. These posters were presented as part of the PHCY6102 Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics
course taught by Dr. Baskaran “Baski” Thyagarajan, M. Pharm., Ph.D., assistant professor

April 4, 2014 — Lisa Ohnstad (class of 2015), Rebecca Pullos (class of 2014), and their fellow team members were awarded “Most Creative Business Plan” in the 2014 University of Wyoming John P. Ellbogen $30K Entrepreneurship Competition.
Phi Delta Chi Gives Medication Safety Presentation to the Boy Scouts of America
March 27, 2014 — The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy Alpha Mu chapter of
Phi Delta Chi recently gave a medication safety presentation to a Laramie Boy Scout
troop as part of a community outreach service project. Members (pictured L to R) Nathan
Holcomb, Charlie Morrison, Karsten Josie, and Brandon Anderson gave a thirty-minute
presentation to a group of approximately 30 children and adults and provided each
scout member with a handout to take to home to their parents.
UW School of Pharmacy Alumna Sharon Durfee Elected BPS Chair for 2014
March 25, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy alumna Sharon M. Durfee
(B.S.P. '76), R.Ph., BCNSP, was elected by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS)
to serve as the 2014 chair. She succeeds Joseph Saseen, Pharm.D, FASHP, FCCP, BCPS.
UW alumnus John A. Pieper (B.S.P. '77), Pharm.D., FCCP, FAPhA, was voted the chair-elect.
Durfee is the director of Poudre Infusion Therapy, an infusion therapy company that
is part of Columbine Health Systems in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Savannah, Georgia, where he is the clinical director for AriVan Research and the director
of the Dominion Research Center.
UW Pharmacy Alumna Lori Allen Shares Career Insights about Compounding Pharmacy
March 18, 2014 — UW pharmacy alumna Lori Allen, R.Ph., (B.S.P. '91) shares career
insights about her work in the unique specialty of compounding pharmacy for the benefit
of current students and prospective students. Allen is the owner of Mixtures Pharmacy
& Compounding Center, with two locations near Phoenix, Arizona. Mixtures' compounding
specialties include, but are not limited to, anti-aging, bio-identical hormone replacement
therapy, dental preparations, dosage forms, flavoring, pain management, and veterinary
care.
Witzeling Scholarship Endowment Benefits UW Pharmacy Students
February 21, 2014 — Alumnus Kenneth Witzeling (BSP '51) and his wife, Elizabeth, from
Powell, Wyoming, have donated his extensive coin collection to the University of Wyoming
to create the Kenneth and Elizabeth Witzeling Pharmacy Scholarship endowment. For

Interprofessional Education Workshop Provides Opportunities for Collaboration
February 7, 2014 — On January 9, 2014, 72 faculty, 2 senior students and the Dean of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the University of Wyoming gathered for a very successful one-day Interprofessional Education (IPE) Workshop facilitated by Brenda Zierler and Peggy Odegard from the University of Washington Center for Health Science Interprofessional Education, Research and Practice. Twenty-two faculty from the School of Pharmacy (SOP) attended the workshop and four SOP faculty serve on the CHS IPE Committee.

from Anaheim, California, attended the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists

UW Pharmacy P4 Student Andrew Grothen Presents Poster at ASHP Midyear
January 28, 2014 — Andrew Grothen, a University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy P4 student
from Merrimack, New Hampshire, gave a poster presentation titled, "Community Use of
Metformin in Patients without Diabetes Taking Antipsychotics and Mood Stabilizers,"

January 28, 2014 — Jenna Allais, P4 pharmacy student from Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Drew Mcmillan, ASPIRE-pre-pharmacy student from Cody, Wyoming, collaborated on a poster presentation at the 2013 American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Florida, in December.
Xihui (Alex) Xu Receives 2013 C-CRAM Outstanding Researcher Award
January 16, 2014 — Xihui (Alex) Xu, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., is the recipient of the 2013
UW Center for Cardiovascular Research and Alternative Medicine (C-CRAM) outstanding
researcher award. Xu is also the first graduate student from the UW Biomedical Sciences
Graduate Program.

Cara Harshberger Completes the "Dopey Challenge" at Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend
January 14, 2014 — Cara Harshberger, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, completed the Dopey Challenge at the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend in January. She ran a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and full Marathon all in four days, for a total of 48.6 miles!
Travis Brown Receives Prestigious 2014 AACP New Investigator Award
January 10, 2014 — Travis Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutical science,
is one of seventeen recipients of the highly competitive American Association of Colleges
of Pharmacy (AACP) New Investigator Award for 2014. Brown will receive start-up funding
from AACP for his research program, "The Role of Cathepsin K in Mediating Hippocampal
Synaptic Plasticity and Memory."
