Multicultural Graduation Celebration
The University of Wyoming spring semester Multicultural Graduation Celebration, a ceremony that recognizes academic excellence and cultural diversity, will be at 3 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Wyoming Union Yellowstone Ballroom.
Multicultural Affairs, as well as International Students and Scholars, host this semiannual event each fall and spring semester to celebrate the diversity of the UW campus community and the achievements of students who have persevered to earn their undergraduate or graduate degree, says Chicory Bechtel, Multicultural Affairs project coordinator.
The event is free and open to the public. A reception follows the ceremony.
All UW graduating students who are part of a multicultural-recognized student organization; have used, advocated for or participated in services or programs offered through Multicultural Affairs/Dean of Students office or International Students and Scholars; and have taken classes in Ethnic Studies or Gender and Women's Studies programs, are invited to participate.
Any graduates interested in participating must register in advance by emailing either Multicultural Affairs at diversity@uwyo.edu or International Students and Scholars at uwglobal@uwyo.edu.
During the celebration, each graduate is recognized individually, receiving a cultural stole to wear over their graduation gown at the main UW college graduation ceremonies the next day. Cultural stoles reflect the ethnic affiliation or home country with which students identify.
Each graduate also has the opportunity to share words of thanks to those who have supported them while working towards their degree. Family members and friends of graduates are encouraged to attend.
For family members and friends of graduates who are unable to attend the ceremony in person, WyoCast will broadcast the event online in real time and provide access to the recording afterwards.
Gracie Lawson-Borders, UW College of Art and Sciences associate dean, will give the opening remarks. Closing remarks will be delivered by Quincy Howe, UW assistant track coach and an International Students and Scholars alumnus.
