UW Physical Sciences Building Evacuated Due to Hazard

November 18, 2016

The University of Wyoming’s Physical Sciences Building was evacuated Friday afternoon due to a potential explosion hazard and will remain closed until Monday morning.

The problem was caused by an error in a chemistry laboratory where a research scientist and students were working. No injuries have been reported.

An unsafe chemical solution inadvertently was created in a Pyrex container in the lab Thursday, and it was discovered Friday afternoon that a thermal reaction was taking place due to oxidation. Because of its volatility, those in the lab contacted UW Risk Management and Safety, and the UW Police Department (UWPD) which, in turn, contacted the Laramie Fire Department.

After the building was evacuated, it was determined that the relatively small volume of the solution appeared to have stabilized to the point that it did not require further evacuation. A bomb squad assembled by the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and the Laramie Police Department is expected to remove and dispose of the solution Sunday.

The Physical Sciences Building will remain closed until Monday morning, but the area around the building is safe. Regular classes and activities in the building are scheduled to take place Monday. Those needing to access the building before then should call the UWPD at 766-5179.
