The 40-voice University of Wyoming Collegiate Chorale will compete in the 49th Tolosa Choral Contest in Tolosa, Spain, Oct. 29-Nov. 6.

The UW Collegiate Chorale is the only U.S. choir chosen to compete, says Director Nicole Lamartine, a UW Department of Music associate professor.

The community has the opportunity to see the UW Collegiate Chorale perform locally. The chorale will have a “Spain Send-Off Concert” Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for seniors and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online to

The Tolosa Choral Contest will have two separate programs and includes compulsory pieces. The UW Collegiate Chorale will perform “The Polyphony,” a required piece; Monteverdi’s “Si ch’io vorrei morire,” translated loosely into “the longing for passion”; and another required piece of popular Basque music, titled “Xota Xaldun,” a commentary of luck and fate.

Additionally, the chorale will present American folk hymn settings arranged by Shawn Kirchner; African-American spirituals; “Jai Ho,” the notable song from the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire”; and the well-known pop hit “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.

The UW Collegiate Chorale also will perform throughout multiple Basque communities in Borja, Tafalla, Santurtzi and Elorrio. With the help of Basque mentor Elisa Olsen, choir members have learned about Basque language, dance and culture in advance of their trip, Lamartine says.

“The Collegiate Chorale is honored to represent UW and the state of Wyoming on the international stage,” Lamartine says. “We extend much gratitude to the UW Arts and Sciences dean’s office, YouFund contributors and the UW Foundation campaign donors for this opportunity.”

The Tolosa Choral Contest is sponsored by the Center for Initiatives of Tolosa, a government entity promoting Basque culture.
