UW Women Remain Second In Regional Rodeo Standings

The University of Wyoming women’s rodeo team didn’t hurt itself in the latest regional standings, but the Cowgirls have an uphill battle in trying to catch the Central Rocky Mountain Region’s (CRMR) overall leader.

The Cowgirls were third in last week’s regional rodeo in Lamar, Colo., but it was another dominating performance by league-leader Gillette College that is making a mockery of the CRMR team standings.

The Pronghorns have won all three regional rodeos this season with just two more left on the fall docket. The Gillette women simply dominated the Lamar Community College rodeo last weekend, overwhelming the field with 750 total points, outdistancing runner-up Eastern Wyoming College (EWC), which scored 185 team points. The UW women were a distant third with 155 points.

For the season, the Pronghorns have a nearly 1,000-point lead over the Cowgirls. Gillette College has amassed 1,520 points through three events, while the UW women are looking up at the overall leaders with 535 points. EWC is third with 422.

UW’s Casey Reimler kept her grip on the regional goat tying lead by placing third in the average at Lamar. The Rozet senior split sixth place in the opening round and had an even better time in the short to split second place. She added points by placing third in the average. She scored 100 points in the event.

The final 55 team points came from Rachael Calvo, from Bassett, Neb., who was fifth in the barrel racing average.

Another UW Cowgirl, Justene Hirsig, of Cheyenne, broke into the team roping standings with her UW partner, Denton Shaw, from Lusk. However, their second-place points did not count in the overall team scores because neither was selected for their respective four-member and six-member teams. Each team is selected before the weekend’s rodeo, and those not selected are still eligible to compete as individuals.

The UW men’s team had a rough go at Lamar last weekend, coming away with points in just one event.

The team roping brother duo of Denton and Dusty Taylor, of Craig, Colo., was fifth in the competition’s average. Their combined 120 points placed the Cowboys eighth in the team standings. Central Wyoming College (CWC) broke into the winner’s circle for the first time this season, winning with 320 points. Chadron State College and Gillette College split the runner-up position with 305 team points.

For the season, Sheridan College heads the pack with 1,245 points through three fall rodeos, while Gillette College is second at 1,155. The Pokes slipped a notch to sixth place with 805 points.

Three other UW competitors had good outings at Lamar last weekend, but their points did not count in the team’s overall production.

Coby Lane, from Torrington, won the bull riding event and was one of just two riders to cover two head; JC Flake, of Mesa, Ariz., and partner Jon Peterson, of Gillette College, combined to win in team roping; and Chase Rose, of Lincoln, Calif., was third in the bareback riding average.

Competition in the region will stay in the Cowboy State the final two weekends of the fall season. Action moves to Riverton this weekend for the CWC rodeo, and the fall season concludes with the Laramie County Community College competition.
