Internationally acclaimed dance company Ballet Hispanico will bring its brand of original Latin dance to the University of Wyoming Sunday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.

The performance will be the first of the 2019-2020 UW Presents season after last week’s performance of female a cappella quintet Nobuntu was canceled because of poor weather conditions.

Tickets for the Ballet Hispanico performance cost $20 for the public; $17 for senior citizens, and UW faculty and staff; and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

From its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, Ballet Hispanico has grown into a world-class institution, according to its website. Ballet Hispanico is an American dance company based in Manhattan, N.Y., and was founded by the Puerto Rican/Mexican American dancer and choreographer Tina Ramirez in 1970.

“Now under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro, the company performs a diverse repertory by the foremost choreographers of our time, as well as emerging artists,” says UW Presents Director Philip Moline.

The works fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style of concert dance in which theatricality and passion propel every move. The choreographers represent numerous countries, including Venezuela, Cuba, Trinidad, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia.

Ballet Hispanico has given more than 3,350 performances to audiences of more than 2 million people throughout 11 countries.

The next UW Presents program will feature Slavic Soul Party!, a Balkan-soul-Gypsy-funk band, Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.

Each year, UW Presents brings a variety of internationally known performers to the UW campus, often at ticket prices much less than at larger venues. UW Presents assists the university in its broad educational mission by presenting a balanced program of music, theater and dance, featuring performances by artists of national and international distinction.

This season features three performances during the fall semester and five spring semester performances. All shows will take place in either the Performing Arts Center or the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
