Black History Month Events Scheduled at UW

A Black History Conference is among highlights of Black History Month Jan. 31-Feb. 28 at the University of Wyoming.

“Making a Way Out of No Way: Re-Examining Black Women in America’s Narrative” is the theme of Black History Month, sponsored by UW’s African American and Diaspora Studies (AADS) and the Black Student Alliance (BSA). Events are free and open to the public.

The Black History Conference is scheduled Friday, Feb. 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m in Coe Library, Room 506. Doors open at 8 a.m.

Events are:

-- 8:30 a.m., Wyoming African Students Association drumming and opening remarks by Ulrich Adelt, AADS director, followed by additional remarks from Paula Lutz, UW College of Arts and Sciences dean.

-- 9 a.m., “History of Black History Month” presentation by Fredrick Douglass Dixon, UW School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice assistant professor.

-- 9:30 a.m., “Experiences of Black Women at the University of Wyoming” panel discussion.

-- 10:15 a.m., UW student panel presentations.

-- 11 a.m., Keynote speaker, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It: Reflections of Memory, Race, Rejection and Reunion in Post-War Germany,” Tracey Patton, UW Department of Communication and Journalism professor.

-- Noon, Keynote speaker, “Epistemic and Gender Apartheid: (Re)Locating Black Women in Liberation Discourse,” Professor Venus Evans-Winters, Illinois State University.

-- 1 p.m., Lunch and closing remarks.

-- Jan. 31, 3-3:45 p.m., “Sha-Rock Pioneering Women of Hip-Hop,” Wyoming Union, Room 203.

-- Feb. 7, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Black History Conference, Coe Library, Room 506.

-- Feb. 10, 5-6 p.m., “The Legacy of Rosa Parks,” Coe Library, Room 123.

-- Feb. 17-27, UW BSA Week, events to be announced.

-- Feb. 24, 5-6 p.m., “The Assassination of Sandra Bland” film and discussion, Coe Library, Room 123.

-- Feb. 27, 5-7 p.m., “Soul Food” dinner, location to be announced.

-- Feb. 28, 10-11 a.m., “Women in Hip-Hop Culture” panel discussion, College of Business, Room 9.
