An accomplished educator in the University of Wyoming College of Education has been selected to serve as associate dean for graduate programs in the college.

Jenna Shim, a professor in the School of Teacher Education, will serve in this new capacity for four years, beginning July 1. She will succeed Suzanne Young, who will retire this summer after serving in the College of Education for 24 years, the last 12 years as the associate dean for graduate programs.

The associate dean for graduate programs is a vital component of the administrative leadership of the college and serves the students and faculty by overseeing and evaluating the college’s graduate degree programs, policies and procedures. The associate dean leads efforts to develop new programs to ensure the college meets the needs of its students and the demands of the education and counseling fields. Additionally, this leader prepares annual reports to update U.S. News & World Report and other rankings, as well as works to maintain the college’s national accreditation credentials.

“In this role, I will be committed to fostering the professional and personal growth of all students and fellow colleagues by promoting lifelong and reflective learning and leadership development,” Shim says. “I hope to build upon the work of our previous leadership; to strive for excellence; and to identify and address critical issues related to education in order to build a better future for individuals, our state, our nation and our world.”

Shim joined the faculty in 2009. She has served as program coordinator for the English as a second language (ESL) graduate program; associate director of program management in the School of Teacher Education; and founder of the annual Wyoming ESL and DLI (dual language immersion) Conference.

“Dr. Shim is a prolific scholar whose academic publication record, work with graduate-level teaching endorsements and direction of the annual Wyoming ESL Conference give her a special understanding of the needs of graduate students from the twin lenses of research publication and effective classroom practices for teachers,” says Ray Reutzel, College of Education dean. “She will provide exceptionally strong leadership to the graduate programs of the College of Education now and well into the future.”

Shim’s honors at UW include the 2012-13 College of Education Award for Outstanding Teaching; the 2017-18 College of Education Award for Outstanding Research and Scholarship; and the 2018-19 College of Education Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to the Education Profession. She also was awarded the Everett D. and Elizabeth Lantz Distinguished Professorship in Education from 2018-2020.

Shim earned a B.A. in piano performance at California State University (1994) and an M.M in piano performance from Manhattan School of Music (1996). She received her teaching certificate in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) from the University of California-Los Angeles (2001); and an M.S. in reading education (2006), a CAS in reading education (2007) and a Ph.D. in language and literacy education (2009), all from the University at Albany, State University of New York.
