UW Agricultural Education Program Awarded CASE Implementation Grant

The University of Wyoming is one of six pre-service programs nationwide to be awarded a CASE Implementation Grant, sponsored by Corteva Agriscience, to benefit current and future agricultural education teachers in the state.

This grant will allow UW pre-service teachers to become certified in the “Principles of Agricultural Sciences -- Animal” course through Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE).

Lindsey Freeman, a UW assistant lecturer in the School of Teacher Education, was awarded the $7,500 grant to implement CASE certification to pre-service teachers in the College of Education and professional development opportunities for agricultural education teachers in Wyoming.

“This grant will help establish a CASE Institute in Wyoming, which will provide agriscience professional development to Wyoming agriculture teachers. Additionally, pre-service teachers will have the opportunity to participate at a reduced rate and graduate from UW with a CASE certification in their pocket,” Freeman says. “Ultimately, it will make our graduates more marketable nationally and enhance agriculture programs through specific experiential and STEM-based educational opportunities in agriculture class.”

CASE is an instructional system that is changing the culture of agriculture programs in the United States through intense teacher professional development; inquiry-based, student-focused lessons; assessment; and certification. CASE equips teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom, and prepares students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“CASE is an exceptional curriculum and undoubtedly enhances agricultural education by drawing connections to STEM and inquiry-based learning. This model, however, is costly in order to provide resources needed for innovative learning,” Freeman says. “In a time when teachers are exploring innovative instructional techniques with limited resources, we’re proud to provide this opportunity and funding to Wyoming teachers and future University of Wyoming graduates.”

Corteva Agriscience has offered this grant program for the past eight years to public and private schools and universities to support workforce development and help spark student interest in enriching lives through agriculture.

“Corteva Agriscience is proud to support agricultural educators through CASE. This year, it’s even more important to provide teachers all the support we can, as many are navigating the challenges of teaching a hands-on curriculum in a virtual setting,” says Ronda Hamm, Corteva’s global academic relations manager.
