A University of Wyoming graduate student in the School of Counseling, Leadership, Advocacy and Design recently received the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Foundation Military Scholarship for 2020.

Aaron Temple, of Casper, a Wyoming Army National Guard veteran who served in the Iraq War, will receive an $8,000 stipend to support his education at UW and a plaque commemorating his achievement.

“Earning this scholarship will allow me to continue to develop my professional identity as a counselor, improve my competency in school and mental health counseling work, and serve the military community,” says Temple, who is pursuing a master’s degree in counseling. “It eases the financial burden and allows me to focus more time toward my studies. The scholarship also provides additional professional development and support to aid me in my current program and future career.”

The military scholarship was created to increase the number of counselors available to serve military personnel and families. It provides financial assistance to veterans or active-duty U.S. military service members or their spouses, who are currently enrolled in a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs-accredited, master’s-level counseling program.

As part of the award, Temple will develop a scholarship program plan; attend webinars; submit progress reports; and complete a final project and report. Additionally, he must commit to becoming board certified through the NBCC, and provide mental health services to military service members and veterans within one year of graduation for at least two years.
