Jazz Quartet to Give Virtual Performance at UW April 28

University of Wyoming Department of Music faculty members Ben Markley and Andy Wheelock will team up with bassist Bob Bowman and trumpeter Dan Jonas for a virtual performance Wednesday, April 28.

The performance will be livestreamed at 7:30 p.m. from the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. The group will play a collection of jazz standards and originals. To view the performance, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMXx6nWGL68.

Markley, a UW associate professor, is director of jazz studies and a jazz pianist. He has performed with well-known jazz musicians Brian Lynch, Eddie Henderson, Terell Stafford, George Garzone and John Fedchock. Compositions from each of Markley’s two albums earned him American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards in 2007 and 2008. He co-leads the band Raincheck, which recently released a recording on the Dazzle Recordings label.

Wheelock, a UW assistant professor, is an active jazz drummer and percussionist, and has performed with notable musicians such as Bobby Shew, Chuchito Valdés, Joel Frahm, Jim White, Carlos Vega, Denis Marks, Chip McNeil, Ivan Trevino and Markley. His latest projects include performing with the Ben Markley Quartet, the Gonzalo Teppa Quintet, the Dimitrije Vasiljevic Quintet and with the UW jazz faculty. He is UW’s percussion area coordinator, leads the second jazz band, teaches percussion methods and percussion lessons, and directs the Percussion Ensemble.

Bowman was a faculty member at the University of Missouri, as well as Ottawa University, and leads the Kansas City group INTERSTRING. During his career, he joined the famous Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, touring and recording several albums, including the Grammy Award-winning “Live in Munich.” He has performed with many well-known jazz artists throughout his career.

Jonas currently is assistant director of bands at Weber State University, where he directs the jazz ensemble and the Wildcat Pep Band and teaches music theory, jazz history, rock history and trumpet. A lead trumpet player and soloist, Jonas has shared the stage with many notable jazz artists including Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, Phil Woods and Jon Faddis. He has performed around the world at various jazz festivals, and his playing and compositions can be heard on several albums on the Jazzed Media label.
