The University of Wyoming Chamber Orchestra will present an all-Russian music program at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

The UW Chamber Orchestra is an ensemble of string players directed by James Przygocki, a UW music professor.

The fall opening concert music to be performed spans from Czarist Russian music by Tchaikovsky to Soviet-era music by Dimitri Shostakovich.

The program will open with Tchaikovsky’s third string quartet, arranged for strings by Alexander Glazunov. This piece is dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky’s friend, violinist Ferdinand Laub, who died in 1875.

Following is Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Opus 110a, a version of his String Quartet No. 8 for string orchestra. This work, dedicated to “the memory of the victims of fascism and war,” is among Shostakovich’s most famous pieces of chamber music.

The program ends with “Theme and Variations for String Orchestra” by the late-Romantic Russian composer Glazunov. A student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov bridges the time between Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, and is considered among the top composers of his time.
