UW President, Professor Featured in Wyoming Stargazing Podcast Oct. 19

October 14, 2021

University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel, his partner, Professor Gabrielle Allen, and a theoretical physicist colleague will be guests on a YouTube and Twitch podcast to discuss current and future applications of Albert Einstein’s famous theory.

Seidel, Allen and Miguel Alcubierre are the guests for the Wyoming Stargazing podcast, “The Cosmos Show,” hosted by Samuel Singer, from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. To join the podcast, visit the website at www.wyomingstargazing.org/the-cosmos-show/, follow on Twitch or on YouTube.

Seidel is a professor of physics; Allen is a professor of mathematics and physics; and Alcubierre is a professor of physics and the former director of the Nuclear Sciences Institute at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

On the podcast, they will:

-- Provide background on Einstein’s general relativity and its predictions of black holes and gravitational waves, and the early attempts to solve the equations on computers and detectors to discover gravitational waves.

-- Discuss contemporary approaches to numerical relativity, including what is known as the Einstein toolkit that is used by dozens of science groups around the world to simulate what is seen in detectors, as well as machine learning techniques to find the signals in the detectors.

-- And weigh in on the far future, focusing on concepts such as building a warp drive.

“The Cosmos Show” is billed as the “place to be if you are curious about the universe.” Wyoming Stargazing is a nonprofit organization based in Jackson that “excels at making the often difficult to understand concepts of astronomy accessible to everyone.” The organization offers public and private stargazing programs; solar astronomy and planetarium programs; and other indoor astronomy presentations.
