University of Wyoming Press Seeks Book Proposals, Offers Editorial Support

The University of Wyoming Press (UWyoP), a new imprint of the University Press of Colorado consortium, is seeking proposals for book-length scholarly manuscripts from UW scholars.

UWyoP is seeking manuscripts from a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplines in environmental humanities and public humanities, as well as democracy and the United States. UWyoP is particularly interested in work that considers Wyoming or the Mountain West region in context. This includes works that study ongoing structures of settler colonialism, racial formation and struggles for Indigenous sovereignty in the region.

In environmental humanities, the press seeks work that takes interdisciplinary approaches to understand acute local and global environmental crises and their entanglements with human social relations. UWyoP also seeks public humanities manuscripts that ask how humanities scholarship engages the public; collections on how to conduct humanities research with community partners; and community-created scholarship that is by and for the public, broadly construed.

UWyoP also is interested in books that consider problems of democracy -- local, national and global -- and how the history of race, class and gender has shaped systems, political movements and institutions. The press is especially interested in critical analyses of the United States’ ongoing imperial and colonial relationships, both within and beyond the nation’s borders.

“I am very excited about the launch of the University of Wyoming Press,” says Scott Henkel, UW’s Wyoming Excellence Chair in the Humanities and a member of the press editorial committee. “The press will publish books that will be valuable to the people of Wyoming and the West and will help to shape vital conversations about the quality of democracy, environmental issues and more in Wyoming and the world. In the best spirit of the land-grant mission, UWyoP will produce cutting-edge research in conversation with and relevant to the people we serve.”

Additionally, the editorial team at UWyoP is committed to being a resource to UW faculty, graduate students and other scholars who are interested in scholarly publishing. Department chairs, program managers and directors are encouraged to contact the team if they would like to schedule workshops or informational sessions on topics such as how to find the right university press; how to write a book proposal; how to transform a dissertation into a book; and what to expect from the peer-review process.

“I highly encourage UW community members to reach out to the press about one-on-one meetings, regardless of the current stage of projects or current position or appointment,” says Robert Ramaswamy, UWyoP acquisitions editor. “We’re committed to providing support, particularly for first-time authors, first-generation students and scholars with identities that have been historically underrepresented and marginalized in the academy.”
