University of Wyoming Libraries recently launched a Peer Research Mentor (PRM) program to better support UW students in their academic success.

The purpose of the program is to have students help other students with their research. PRMs help other students find peer-reviewed articles and background information and narrow search topics.

“We’re excited about the PRM program because it will enhance support for our students,” says Larry Schmidt, chair of Research and Instruction at UW Libraries. “This program will provide student-to-student interactions that will facilitate growth through active interactions between mentor and mentee as they learn together. Studies have shown that students are less intimidated to ask other students for help, and peer mentor programs help students feel integrated and supported during the first year in college.”

PRMs are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon-3 p.m. Students can stop by or schedule an appointment online. Mentors are located next to the Writing Center in the Student Learning Commons on Level 1 of Coe Library.

PRMs are trained in using research tools and strategies. They will encourage students to schedule a consultation with a librarian for more in-depth research questions.

There are several ways for students to consult with a librarian. They can connect through a librarian chat, which is available from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week; text (307) 460-4336 anytime between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday; make an appointment; or email coeref@uwyo.edu.

For more information about UW Libraries’ PRM program, call Susan Schulz, a library specialist, at (307) 766-5605 or email sschulz7@uwyo.edu.
