“We are looking forward to seeing the Wyoming High School Student Press Association for the first time in more than 20 years at UW,” says Cindy Price Schultz, head of the Department of Communication and Journalism (COJO). “The students have a great opportunity to learn about writing, design, photography and other important topics from COJO faculty and other UW and regional experts. The convention will be a catalyst to help high schools all over the state get great ideas for their yearbooks and newspapers.”

The event begins at 9 a.m., with student breakout sessions scheduled throughout the day. The program ends at 3:30 p.m. The keynote speaker is AAron Ontiveroz, a visual journalist specializing in sports and portraiture for The Denver Post, who grew up in Laramie. His work has been recognized by various organizations: Ontiveroz was among members of The Denver Post staff that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Coverage in 2013 for the Aurora theater shooting; has been awarded Emmy Awards and the national Edward R. Murrow Award; the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism; and many awards from the Colorado and Wyoming newspaper associations. Among his assignments, he has covered two Super Bowls; the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia; and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ontiveroz joined The Post in 2010. Before that, he worked as a photographer at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in Cheyenne and interned at The Powell Tribune. He graduated from both Northwest College in Powell and from UW.
