Front Range Chamber Players to Perform Nov. 9 at UW

Theresa Bogard, Glêsse Collet, Raven Olmstead, Erik Peterson and Barbara Thiem

The Front Range Chamber Players (FRCP) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the University of Wyoming’s Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

The nonprofit FRCP is northern Colorado’s resident professional chamber music group. Since its inception in 1985, the ensemble has presented an annual series of concerts in various venues in Fort Collins, always striving to make outstanding chamber music accessible to audiences of all ages. Musicians from across the Front Range have performed with FRCP, and the organization has enjoyed collaborative relationships with other fine arts organizations.

Musicians performing in the UW concert are pianist Theresa Bogard, UW Department of Music professor; violist Glêsse Collet; violinists Erik Peterson and Raven Olmstead; and cellist Barbara Thiem. Among the works to be performed by the chamber players are “Piano Quintet” by Brazilian composer Henrique Oswald; an original work by Colorado composer Carter Pann; and “Terzetto” by Antonín Dvořák.

Bogard is a versatile performer dedicated to expanding the canon of traditional piano repertoire. Internationally known as a pedagogue, she has been honored with numerous teaching awards, including Wyoming Professor of the Year (2008) by the Carnegie Foundation. She has served on the faculty of the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Italy and the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival in Germany.

A world traveler with a passion for other cultures, Bogard has performed on five continents. Her discography includes recordings ranging from solo piano to chamber music collaborations, from music of living composers to her specialty in fortepiano and historical performance practice. Since her first concert tour in Brazil in 2007, she has become obsessed with music from Brazilian composers. Returning to Brazil whenever possible, she has given master classes and performances at universities in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Goiãnia and Porto Alegre.

Bogard has served as an adjudicator at numerous piano competitions and is a Steinway Artist.

A violinist for 28 years with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Peterson has served as concertmaster of the Great Falls Symphony, Up Close and Musical, and Opera Steamboat, as well as principal second violinist of the American Sinfonietta. He currently performs with the Mendelssohn Trio and the Ivy Street Ensemble; maintains a home teaching studio; and serves as artistic director of both the Chintimini Chamber Music Festival and Front Range Chamber Players.

Olmstead is a music educator and violinist who performs an array of genres. She teaches the strings program at St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Denver, and she runs a private violin and early childhood music education studio. She plays with the folk band Alright, Alright and was a founding violinist, singer and arranger in the Northern Empty. Olmstead collaborated with composer Chappell Kingsland in Electric Athena, a piano trio that performs a wide variety of music.

Collet, a Brazilian musician, immigrated to the U.S. in 2016. She served as principal viola in the Symphony Orchestra of Teatro Nacional de Brasília, and she played as viola soloist with conductors Piero Bastianelli, Claudio Cohen, Oswaldo Colasso, Gerald Kegelmann, Elena Herrera and Claudio Santoro. As a member of the Quarteto de Brasília, she performed throughout Brazil and the world, and she is featured on a solo disc of works by Brazilian composers. In 2008, Collet toured the U.S. with Branford Marsalis as principal viola for an all-Brazilian orchestra. She recently retired from the music department at the University of Brasília, where she founded the University of Brasília String Orchestra in 2002.

Thiem is an internationally acclaimed cellist who combines teaching cello and coaching chamber music with her active schedule of solo, concerto and chamber music performances in Europe and the U.S. She is a founding member of the Mendelssohn Trio, and her prolific performance schedule includes 20-30 concerts each year across Europe, the U.S., Canada and South America. Thiem has had many guest artist appearances, including the International Draeseke Conference in Coburg, Germany. Thiem teaches and performs within the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at Colorado State University.
