UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) spoke with Anne Alexander, UW vice provost for strategic planning and initiatives, about the Artificial Intelligence Chatbots Working Group that she co-chairs. The working group has recommended that UW’s administration take steps to address -- and responsibly use -- artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT. The Casper Star-Tribune published a similar article.

UW Assistant Professor Corrie Knapp also was interviewed by WPR about the “Adapting to Climate Change in Wyoming” grant program that will award more than $30,000 to four separate projects over a two-year period. Funding will support climate change adaptation projects for historically underserved, Indigenous and rural communities and organizations.

KUNC Radio carried a Mountain West News Bureau story in which UW law Professor George Mocsary discussed some new gun laws that have been introduced in several Mountain West state legislatures. Mocsary heads the new Firearms Research Center housed in UW’s College of Law.

Gbemisola Abudu, a UW marketing and public relations graduate, is among the “25 most influential Nigerian women in sports business,” according to Brila, a leading sports media outlet. Abudu, a dual citizen of Nigeria and the U.S., currently is the NBA Africa vice president and the country head of NBA Nigeria.

Kevin Monteith, an associate professor and Wyoming Excellence Chair in UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, was among the guest speakers at the inaugural Mule Deer Days last week in Rock Springs, reported Wyo4News.

County 17 and K2 Radio noted that the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality will host three seminars this spring led by Caitlin Youngquist, from UW Extension’s Washakie County office, who will provide residents with the basics on how to successfully compost whole animals, offal or viscera.

A “UW in Your Community” event is scheduled at the Newcastle Lodge and Convention Center Tuesday. The Weston County gathering will be the fifth in a series of “UW in Your Community” gatherings planned around the state. The News Letter Journal published UW’s announcement.

The Sheridan Press published UW’s release noting that members of the new class of Wyoming WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) Medical Education Program students spent the day recently in Cheyenne meeting with medical school and state leaders. They received updates and recognized the continued support offered by the state of Wyoming for more than 20 years. The newspaper also published UW’s release announcing that Mortar Board members recently selected UW staff members who offered “exceptional contributions to the University of Wyoming and inspiration of students.”

WyoToday Media published UW’s releases announcing that applications are now being accepted for the Windy Ridge Foundation Astro Camp and the Teton STEM Academy. Both programs will take place in June. The news outlet also published UW’s release announcing that the Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Initiative recently released an outdoor recreation report that documents several key elements of just how the industry contributes to Wyoming communities. WORTH staff members worked with the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation to compile the report.

The Cheyenne Post published UW’s release noting the UW meat judging team’s first-place finish at Iowa State University.

The “Steel Bridge Education Lectures: From Concept to Delivery” webinar series, led by UW Professor Michael Barker, will cover the many aspects of designing, fabricating and constructing steel bridges, which provide durable, efficient and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
