Next Steps for Becoming Compliant
To meet UW’s Title II accessibility expectations, social media managers must follow a few key steps that support consistent, accountable and accessible communication. The items below outline what every unit should complete to manage an official UW account responsibly.
Join UW's Approved Account Structure
All UW units managing official social media accounts should be connected to the approved account structure overseen by Institutional Marketing. This process allows certains accounts to be linked to UW brand administrators through tools like Meta Business Suite or will allow you to share your business login credentials securely. This helps ensure business continuity, maintains brand standards and allows us to support your account if staffing changes occur. Get connected with us today!
Complete Social Media Accessibility Training
Beginning in early 2026, all UW social media managers will be required to complete the university’s Social Media Accessibility Training. This training provides practical guidance on accessibility expectations and ensures every account meets Title II and WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
This training is required by all UW personnel managing social media accounts on behalf of the University of Wyoming. Student accounts are not required to complete the training.
Review the Social Media Accessibility Guidelines
All social media teams should follow UW’s established accessibility guidelines, including requirements for alt text, captions, contrast and clear communication practices.
Use UW’s Accessibility Resources
Take advantage of campus resources that support accessible media production, including video captioning and transcription guidance or UW's Alt Text Generator tool.
Social Media Best Practices
Core Accessibility Requirements
Recognize and make sure your social media posts always include:
- Alt text
- Captions on videos
- Adequeate contrast on graphics
- Avoiding embedded text on graphics
- Writing descriptive link language instead of using "Click Here"
- Ensuring content works on mobile
Avoid Complicated Graphics
A common accessibility violation in social media is posting complex graphics that contain a lot of words and/or low contrast making it difficult for screen readers to announce content to users. Instead, use simple graphics (don't just post your event flyer!) and make sure your graphics and images always contain alt text.
Follow Best Practices
