AAC Systems included unaided and aided supports.
Unaided systems do not use additional external supports. Unaided includes sign language, gestures, facial expressions, body language, vocalizations, and verbalizations.
Aided systems need external supports. Aided systems include low tech, mid tech, and high tech items.
Combinations of unaided and aided supports including low, mid, and high tech may be needed to support communication across environments and partners.
Low Tech AAC items include picture communication boards and books. Low Tech items do not provide speech output. If you are interested in making your own low-tech picture communication board contact Terri Wofford at twofford@uwyo.edu for a training. Here are a few examples of low-tech AAC loan items.
Mid Tech AAC items, provide speech output recorded by another person (digitized speech). Here are a few examples of mid-tech AAC loan items.
High Tech AAC items frequently provide options for both computerized (synthesized speech), recorded (digitized speech), provide more message capabilities and offer a larger variety of features. These are often called speech generating devices (SGD’s). Here are a few examples of high-tech AAC loan items.
WATR also has a large inventory of communication apps available for loan.
