Supervising a Graduate Student

Division of Communication Disorders Alumni

Supervising a UW student

“Paying it forward” is often the expression used when a supervisor agrees to mentor an SLP graduate clinician. Clinical education is one of the hallmarks of the UW graduate program, helping clinicians to bridge their academic knowledge to their clinical skills and develop their craft. Along with the satisfaction of “giving back” to the profession, there are additional benefits of hosting a UW clinician. These include an honorarium towards ASHA membership dues. If you are interested in mentoring a student or allowing an undergraduate student to observe at your local facility, contact the clinic director, Corri Sandoval, at csandov3@uwyo.edu or 307-766-6438 for more information. Supervision matters! Make a difference as a clinical educator by supervising a graduate student.

Options for Clinical Education:

  • Community Placement (part time placement 2-4 days a week)
  • Externships (12 Weeks)

Resources

  • ASHA Standard V-E requirements for supervisors as of 2020:
    • Hold ASHA certification
    • Completed a minimum of nine months of practice experience post-certification
    • Earned at least two hours of professional development post-certification (one time requirement) in the area of supervision and/or clinical instruction (If you supervise a UW student, we have access to free courses through CAPCSD to aid you with meeting these requirements if needed.)
  • FAQs about Supervision
  • Knowledge and Skills Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists Providing Supervision
  • Resources for Supervision
  • CAPCSD currently offers three courses in clinical education. The courses will be available at no charge to CAPCSD member programs such as the University of Wyoming.
