Department of Visual & Literary Arts

Drawing

The Drawing program provides students with a solid foundation in observational skills through an investigation of the descriptive and expressive potential of a variety of drawing media. Early courses develop the technical and intellectual understanding necessary to succeed in all of the media of visual expression. Drawing is understood to be the most basic tool in visual thinking as well as a form of art in its own right. Students are initially expected to develop and strengthen their skills in proportion, value, shape, line, the illusion of depth and volume, and overall composition while working from still life and portraits, interior and landscape.  The human figure is explored through both careful anatomical study and more expressive personal interpretations of the human form. Upper level classes allow students to extend their drawing abilities through explorations o scale, combined media, concept, as well as cross-disciplinary and non-traditional approaches.
