Civil and Architectural Engineering
College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Professor Turner has Bachelors degrees in geology and civil engineering, an M.S. degree
in structural engineering, and a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Cornell University
(1986). Dr. Turner practiced as an engineering geologist for Herbert and Associates,
Inc., 1976-1978, and continues to be active as a geotechnical engineering consultant.
He is a registered Professional Engineer in Wyoming. He has conducted research on
drilled shaft foundations, anchored retaining walls, landslide stabilization, and
rock mechanics. He is the author of 100+ technical papers and reports and has been
a principal investigator on over 20 funded research projects. He is a past chairman
of the ASCE Committee on Deep Foundations, and has served as a member of the Editorial
Board for the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering of the Geo-Institute.
Dr. Turner has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney, Australia (1993)
and the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (1994) and was awarded an Erskine Fellowship
as a Visiting Professor at Canterbury in 2002. He received the Outstanding Service
Award (1992) and the Presidents Award (2000) from the ADSC: International Association
of Foundation Drilling and is a frequent speaker at ADSC seminars and workshops. Dr.
Turner served as Conference Chair for Geo-Support 2004, a geotechnical specialty conference
and construction equipment exposition that was sponsored jointly by the Geo-Institute
of ASCE and the ADSC. Most recently Dr. Turner was the consultant for NCHRP Synthesis
Project 36-12, “Use of Rock Socketed Drilled Shafts for Highway Structure Foundations.
