Jack Alford, Director of Adult Education & Community Services and Professor

Jack served the university for over forty years. He was involved in a number of adult education activities: veterans appraiser, director of correspondence study, coordinator of audiovisual services, director of Adult Education and Community Services (1968-1972), and professor. An extremely popular instructor, Jack helped teachers throughout the state improve their instructional techniques.

John “Jack” Alford, a former longtime Laramie resident, died at his home in Los Osos, California, Wednesday, September 24, 2003.

He was born in 1917 in New York and moved to Wyoming during the Depression where he worked on the oil pipelines before attending the University of Wyoming.

He married Annabeth Hegewald in 1943. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in Europe during World War II as a second lieutenant. After the war he returned to Laramie and continued his studies at UW, graduating with a Ph.D. in Education.

He was director of education and audio visual services and later became a professor in the Department of Education. he was also the UW golf coach and a co-founder of Jacoby Golf Course.

He is survived by his children Jim Alford, Robin Alford Nelson, Rich Alford and Jeff Alford.
