Margaret Garner with student

Margaret Garner of the Professional Writing Minor discusses work with a student.

What is Professional Writing?

"Professional writing," generally speaking, refers to the kinds of writing that working professionals—in any field—use in order to participate in the activities that their respective professions value. Working professionals employ an array of genres, digital tools, and critical skills to accomplish a wide range of rhetorical goals, such as connecting with clients, securing funding, proposing and sharing ideas, collaborating with others, managing projects, reporting on organizational activities, corresponding with colleagues, and visualizing data.

Depending on your field, this might mean writing grant proposals or reports, building a Facebook profile, developing a Website or user manual, or crafting a travel brochure or magazine article. Every profession has its go-to texts, its typical communication situations. And, every professional writes.

The professional writing minor is not just for English majors or people who like writing. Professional writing skills are necessary for all future professionals. Come see how the professional writing minor can help you develop the background and skills you need to hit the ground running in your new career.
