Facility for Imaging the Near- and Sub-surface Environment (FINSE)

FINSE is a facility that houses a broad array of near-surface geophysical instrumentation. In this first year of our center’s existence, we are acquiring instrumentation and developing our off-campus facility. Some of the equipment listed below is in hand, while others will be acquired over the next year.

By the end of the five-year NSF grant, we intend to transition FINSE to a national facility for near-surface geophysical instrumentation. In the meantime, we are open to collaborative projects involving the use of our equipment. Please contact Steve or Brad if you have project ideas.

The equipment includes:

Seismic refraction:

  • Four 24-channel Geometrics Geodes (96 channels total)

Seismic reflection:

  • Landstreamer with 3-component geophones

  • Thumper source

Electrical resistivity/IP:

  • Two AGI SuperSting R8/IP/S/WIFI instruments

  • Passive 56-electrode cables (8 cables with 14 take-outs, 5.25 m spacing)

  • 112 total electrodes, 2D and 3D capability

  • SuperSting borehole passive electrical resistivity imaging with 56 graphite electrodes at 1m electrode spacing

  • PowerSting-10kW external transmitter system for deep imaging

Ground-Penetrating Radar:

  • GSSI 200 MHz and 400 MHz shielded instruments

  • Mala downhole GPR

  • Mala Pro-Ex (or similar)

Downhole Logging:

  • Mount Sopris QuickLink tools, including caliper, sonic velocity, natural gamma, formation resistivity, and borehole fluid temperature/conductivity tools

  • 500 m winch and wire assembly

Complex Resistivity:

  • Radic SIP Fuchs III system (or similar)

Gravity:

  • Scintrex CG-5 Autograv microgravimeter

Magnetics:

  • Geometrics G-858 MagMapper

EMI:

  • GEM-2 or EM-31 inductively coupled conductivity meters

Magnetic Resonance Sounding (NMR):

  • VistaClara GMR

Lake Acoustics:

  • Knudsen Pinger CHIRP echosounder

Logistics Support:

  • F-250 field truck

  • Two Polaris 500 ATV’s

  • Two Polaris RMK 600 snowmobiles

Software:

  • Multiple licenses of Geometrics SeisImager and SeisController software

  • Multiple licenses of AGI EarthImager 2D/3D software
