Apply to EMS graduate programs

Requirements and Deadlines

The department admits graduate students year round if grant funding is available.

  1. Students applying for an MS program should have:
    • GPA of 3.0 from all college work
    • GRE scores of 291 for verbal and quantitative reasoning and a 4.0 for analytical writing
    • 3 letters of reference
    • Personal statement
  2. Students applying for a PhD program should have:
    • GPA of 3.0 from all college work
    • GRE scores of 297 for verbal and quantitative reasoning and a 4.0 for analytical writing
      • Students with a thesis based MS do not need to submit GRE scores
      • Students wanting to be considered for the ESM Merit Fellowship, must submit GRE scores (see funding for required scores)
    • 3 letters of reference
    • Personal statement
  3. International students from non-English speaking countries must show English proficiency in oral and written communications through an on-site evaluation at the university. TOEFL scores may also be submitted. Those on state funding must be cleared to work in the classroom.

Steps for Application

  1. Contact and correspond with a potential faculty advisor.
  2. If acceptable to the department, apply to the University of Wyoming at Note that you can enter your personal information for no charge. When you get to the point of uploading your application materials, you will be asked to pay the $50 application fee. If you need assistance with the $50 application fee, please contact your potential faculty advisor.

Submit all application materials listed below to  

1.  Personal Statement

  1. Address reasons for wanting to pursue a graduate education,
  2. Explain previous educational and research experience,
  3. Current interest in research,
  4. Academic and professional goals, and if the applicant has had any contact with and wants to study under a particular faculty member,
  5. Current resume, and
  6. Any other relevant information (i.e., need for funding, etc.)
2. Three Letters of Reference

These should come from people that have an understanding of the applicant's academic and/or research record. We are most interested in perceptions of the applicant's potential for success in the field of choice.

You are required to use online reference system that is part of the online application.  You will enter the reference's name and email and the online system will let the reference know how to prepare their letter. If you have problems with this system, please contact the department ( or (307) 766-3114.

3. GRE

Graduate Record Exam scores must be submitted and an MS program. We require the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing scores.  Minimums for admission include 291 (1000) for master's programs and 4.0 for Analytical Writing.  For a PhD you do not need GRE scores if you completed an M.S. degree with thesis.  Otherwise, the PhD program requires a 297 (1100).  You will upload unofficial scores on the website.

4. Official Transcripts

You will be asked to upload unofficial transcripts on the website. Official transcripts from all higher education institutions you have attended must be sent directly to the University of Wyoming (see next section).  The University requires at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Apply to University of Wyoming

  1. The faculty member with whom you have been corresponding or the department will notify you that your application has been favorably reviewed and that you should finalize your application.
  2. Official transcripts and GRE scores must be sent to the UW Admissions Office, Knight Hall 150, Department 3435, 1000 E. University Avenue, Laramie, WY 82071. More info is available at UW Graduate Admissions.
  3. If the applicant is an international student, the transcript and degree are evaluated by an international program evaluator in the UW Admissions Office. This evaluation is to determine equivalency of undergraduate degrees to those from U.S. institutions.
