The Proseminar course INST 1010 should be completed as soon as possible after declaring your International Studies major. The Capstone course, INST 4950, should be taken during your final semester.
Core Courses are designed to provide you with a general background on world affairs. Students start their program with courses from the concepts and methods group. The international studies core requirement requires completion of six hours in each of two core areas: Concepts and Approaches and International Systems.
Courses in your concentration allow you to focus more narrowly on a specific region of the world, problem area or discipline. Students take a minimum of 15 hours of course work in either a thematic or regional concentration. The thematic concentrations are: International Development and the Global Environment, Global Economic Systems, and International Culture and Social Issues. The regional concentrations are: Western Europe and the Former Soviet Union, Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Rim, and Latin America. Concentration courses must be selected from at least three different disciplines.
Students take six or more hours of elective courses from the program course guide that are neither in their concentration nor the core groups. INST 2200 (Study Abroad Preparation) and INST 2260 (Foreign Locale) can fulfill this requirement.
International studies majors will complete a minimum of 18 hours in a single foreign language, not including American Sign Language.
