In August 2019, the University of Wyoming was awarded one of 215 humanities projects grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The libraries received over $200,000 to support the Wyoming Digital Newspaper Project.

The project involves digitization of 100,00 pages of Wyoming newspapers, dating from 1863 to 1963, as part of the state's participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP)

The project is in partnership with the Wyoming State Archives, and the digitization project will be hosted on the Wyoming State Library's website.

Since receiving the grant, the project has welcomed a new staff member to the team. Rachael Laing joined the team from Illinois and has begun production work for the project. A sample batch has recently accepted by the Library of Congress after minor changes and delays caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Titles suggested by the Selection Board have been reviewed and will soon be submitted as the final list for the first 100,000 pages of newspaper content. Additionally, the project was shared at the International Federation of Library Associations' News Media Conference in Mexico in March 2020.
