Welcome To Residential Living

Downey, McIntyre, Orr, White, Tobin, and Honors House primarily house freshman students. These close-knit communities enhance the experience of living on-campus. Most rooms are double-occupancy and are furnished with two extra-long twin beds (with mattresses) that can be bunked or lofted, two chairs, two desks, closet spaces with drawers, and one sink. 

Most hall floors have central common areas and study rooms. Each floor is staffed by two live-in Resident Assistants who monitor the halls and promote community engagement. There are three residence hall room options:

  1. Washakie Suites (two single rooms with an adjoining bath)

  2. Double Rooms

  3. Small Single Rooms

Downey Hall

Downey Hall, named after June Etta Downey was constructed in 1965 and is an eight-story building that houses up to 384 residents.

ABOUT JUNE ETTA DOWNEY

June Etta Downey was an American psychologist who studied personality and handwriting. Downey was born and raised in Laramie, Wyoming, where she received her degree in Greek and Latin from the University of Wyoming. Throughout her life, Downey wrote seven books and over seventy articles. Included in this work, Downey developed the Individual Will-Temperament Test, which was one of the first tests to evaluate character traits separately from intellectual capacity and the first to use psychographics methods for interpretation. In addition to her many published works, Downey held several prestigious positions. She chaired the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Wyoming and in doing so became the first woman to hold a head position at a state university.

McIntyre Hall

McIntyre Hall, named after Clara Frances McIntyre was constructed in 1966 and is a twelve-story building that houses up to 588 residents.

ABOUT CLARA FRANCES MCINTYRE

McIntyre Hall was named after Dr. Clara Frances McIntyre, who became a professor of English at the University of Wyoming in 1913. The University of Wyoming's English Department offers a scholarship in Clara McIntyre's name to a senior English major who intends to pursue graduate study at the University of Wyoming or elsewhere or is a junior English major.

Orr Hall

Orr Hall, named after Harriet Knight Orr was constructed in 1966 and is an eight-story building that houses up to 377 residents.

ABOUT HARRIET KNIGHT ORR

Dr. Harriet Knight Orr was originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming and graduated from the University of Wyoming with the class of 1898. Upon graduation, Dr. Orr taught school in Cheyenne, California, and even lived with her husband in Mexico for a time. In 1921, after the death of her husband, she returned to Laramie and headed the secondary school in the College of Education until 1928. Harriet taught history and was the principal of the training school until her retirement in 1945.

White Hall

White Hall, named after Laura A. White was constructed in 1967 and is a twelve-story building that houses up to 587 residents.

Fun Fact: White Hall is the tallest building in Wyoming!

Dr. Laura A. White served as university faculty from 1913 until 1948.

Honors House

The Honors House is a special living option offered in collaboration between the Honors College and Housing.

Located on the corner of Fraternity Row and 15th Street, the Tudor-style landmark was built in 1940. On the main floor of the house, there is a formal dining area and sitting room along with a 2.5-story great room and fireplace. Both double and single rooms are equipped with single beds that can be lofted or bunked, a desk with a hutch and chair, and a three-drawer wardrobe.  

The Honors House has a full kitchen, game room, study areas, laundry facilities, and common space.

To apply to live in the Honors House, applicants must:

  • Be accepted into the Honors College

  • Complete the Residence Life and Dining Contract

  • Complete the Honors House Application, which will be available in early March 1, 2023. 

Review of Honors House applications for the Academic Year 2023-2024 will begin June 1st, 2023, and continue until the house is filled. Students selected for placement in the Honors House must be members in good standing of the University Honors College. To be considered for Honors House placement, a completed residence hall contract with Housing is required. Honors House room pricing is based on room type and is the same as residence hall pricing. A Washakie Dining Center meal plan is required of all Honors House residents and is selected as part of your housing contract. Students will be selected for the Honors House in early June and notified via email. Rooms will be assigned for this community, and all rooms are open for new assignments each year. Spots in the Honors House are limited due to the number of beds available (29).

Tobin House

The Tobin House is a living and learning community for first-generation students at the University of Wyoming!

Interested in living in a community with other first-generation students?  During the 2022-2023 academic year, the Tobin House will host the First Generation Community.  This community aims to help students have a successful transition to college.  Students who choose this community will have access to additional opportunities to learn about the university, interact with first-generation staff and faculty, and gain valuable skills and resources.

Fun Facts About the Tobin House:

  • All of the resident assistants (RAs) in Tobin House are first-generation students

  • In the Tobin House, all RAs will plan specialized programming tailored to first-generation students

  • The cost of living in the Tobin House is the same rate as the UW residence halls

  • Tobin House has a capacity to house 67 students

  • Formerly a UW sorority house, the Tobin House sits on the corner of 15th Street and Sorority Row
