Welcome to the Department of Mathematics
By combining a passion for teaching with a deep commitment to research, the faculty in the Mathematics Department are dedicated to excellence in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The department strives to nurture and prepare its students for successful careers in the mathematical sciences, whether in academic, governmental, or industrial positions.
The department specializes in the mathematical areas of Analysis; Applied/Computational Mathematics; and Algebra, Combinatorics & Number Theory. Interdisciplinary research is fostered through collaborations with scientists, engineers, and computer specialists in other UW departments and off campus.
The department offers weekly seminars and colloquia, the annual Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium Summer School, and numerous opportunities for students to learn from and work with nationally and world-renowned mathematicians. The Summer Mathematics Institute, the Institute for Scientific Computing, and the Institute for Subsurface Flow are all housed in the Mathematics Department. The Math Club, Putnam team, and various research projects provide additional mathematical experiences for students at all levels.
