The University of Wyoming’s Doctorate of Philosophy in Mathematics program is designed to be completed in three years if the applicant enters the program with a master’s degree in mathematics. Applicants without master’s degrees should expect to graduate in five years.
The program stresses a wide knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, analysis, and applied/computational math. Students gain experience as instructors of undergraduate math classes and as mathematical researchers.

Pass the foundation exam and a qualifying exam
Teach two semesters of college mathematics
Pass the preliminary exam
Demonstrate competence in a research tool, such as a foreign language or a mathematical software package
Write and orally defend a doctoral dissertation
Complete a combination of 72 semester hours of coursework and dissertation research
