Online Energy Concentration

The Online Energy Concentration MBA Program is designed for professionals working in the energy industry. Individuals electing to pursue this track will take 3 additional energy focused courses after successful completion of the general online MBA course of study for a total of 39 credit hours. The three courses outlined below were selected as a direct result of conversations with relevant industry leaders - the identified courses provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge related to real-world application within the highly competitive industry.

  • Supply Chain Management in the Energy Industry.   Examines the field of supply chain management in an energy context.  Study procurement and distribution strategies, concepts, tools and techniques that support energy operations.  Course activities and case studies will address effective execution of these strategies and the appropriate supporting activities

  • Energy Finance: Project Evaluation.   Introduction (i) to traditional engineering cost methods to evaluate investments in energy and mineral projects and (ii) to modern techniques to make these decisions under uncertainty given the technical and economic risk factors.

  • Fundamentals of Accounting in the Energy Industry.   Introduces students to basic financial accounting and reporting issues related to energy producing activities.  Specifically, the course will investigate current accounting practices of energy producing companies related to exploration, acquisition, development, and delivery of energy products.  The course will also cover financial requirements of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

"One thing I enjoy about teaching in the MBA program is seeing students pull together skills from various courses in the energy concentration to solve problems. They learn about accounting, finance, supply chains, and sustainability in various courses and are able to apply knowledge from each area for comprehensive solutions to issues that do not fit neatly into one box. Managers should not focus to solve an "accounting" problem without realizing the implications their actions have on other areas of the business, and our MBA students leave the program with this understanding." - Dr. Rob Glasscock, MBA Energy Accounting Professor
