"... if culture was a house, then language was the key to the front door,

to all the rooms inside."

Khalid Hosseini, And the Mountains Echoed

Dear International Students,

Welcome to Laramie and welcome to the ESL program at the University of Wyoming.

The ESL program serves international students and faculty from all Colleges on campus;
consequently, it is your place to go for all kinds of English language learning related
questions and issues.

The ESL program is a relatively young program on campus created to support the English
language learning and enhancement of UW’s growing number of international students.
Our goal is to facilitate your studies by helping you improve your English skills and
understand cultural differences. You may experience that, due to the language barrier,
you are facing more challenges than American students; for example that you have to
put more time and effort into your class preparations and assignments. However, our
ESL courses can help you get a better grip on how to write and communicate well in
English; and thus, they can help you to enhance your academic success at UW and beyond.

International students often ask me how to improve their English skills. Here is what I
tell them: Language learning takes time, and it will prove most beneficial for you to take
this time during your first one or two semesters at UW. You may think that English
grammar, writing, pronunciation and intonation will come to you “automatically” once
you live in an English speaking environment. But this is only partially true: You will learn
a lot of new vocabulary and common expressions pretty fast, but can you also improve
your academic writing skills and learn about correct English pronunciation and
intonation “on-the-go”? – Probably not.

Therefore, explore our website and find out what fits you.

Have fun, - and don’t hesitate to contact me or my colleagues if you have more questions.

Yours sincerely,

Petra Heinz
ESL Coordinator and Lecturer
