Opera in a Gym is a touring ensemble that presents a forty-minute opera especially composed, written, or adapted for young audiences (elementary grades K-5). Our mission is to provide an imaginative musical and theatrical experience through innovative storytelling and beautiful singing for elementary school audiences. Since its inception in 2006, Opera in a Gym has performed for over 4,500 children throughout Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota.
Opera in a Gym is always free to the hosting school. We tour to all communities, regardless of size or economical status, and we specialize in traveling to small, rural schools. Opera in a Gym operates under the auspices of the University of Wyoming’s Fine Arts Outreach Program.
Opera in a Gym performs their productions in the hosting school’s gym. The ensemble travels with a folding ten-piece flat that assembles quickly and is painted to depict the setting of the story. Singers are attired in dynamic costumes, and since the opera is in a gym setting, all characters wear Converse high tops, the official shoe of Opera in a Gym. The elementary school audience sits on the floor, assuring an intimate and energetic theatrical experience.
Opera in a Gym is a member of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA). TYA is a national service organization whose mission it to promote the power of professional theatre for young audiences through excellence, collaboration and innovation across cultural boundaries. The University of Wyoming’s Opera in a Gym is the only university-level, operatic outreach program to belong to TYA.
