Master of Music Education

The Master of Music Education is intended for those students who wish to improve their teaching abilities for the public school environment or to enable them to teach at the college and/or university level. Graduate Placement Examinations in history and theory will be administered the week prior to the commencement of classes and will determine if a student may advance to graduate level coursework.

The University of Wyoming Department of Music offers two options for the Master of Music Education degree:

• Academic year option (application deadline: February 5, 2021) and

• Summer Master of Music Education Program (application deadline for summer 2021 cohort: March 1, 2021). This in-person/online hybrid series of courses designed for working music teachers. The program is aimed to assist music educators engage in effective music teaching development and enhance scholarship and leadership skills while earning a graduate degree. The current program includes: 

  • Three summers of three classes during each summer (2021, 2022, 2023) on the UW campus. 

  • Three online classes taken during school-year semesters (Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Spring 2023). 

  • Capstone Action Research Project (Fall 2022 is reserved for data collection). 

Application for either the academic year cohort (due February 5) or summer cohort (due March 1) must include: 

Documentation of an earned Bachelor of Music Education degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, plus: 

• One year of teaching experience in music education; 

• Video of classroom teaching and/or rehearsing; 

• 1-3 page statement of music education philosophy; 

• Writing sample extracted from an extensive undergraduate research paper; and 

• Three letters of recommendation, including one from an immediate supervisor, on teaching effectiveness,
